I'd choose the former. Add into that the drama of the obviously headed to failure Diana and Charles media circus that these women witnessed when young? The boys were almost always going to have to marry commoners. Will got the "shit or get off the pot" after a decade periodically looking for others and coming up empty, and that's fine. I will never insult Kate's intelligence by assuming any infidelity is some kind of betrayal. I think she knew what she was in for and she is ride or die loyal to her family and to the Firm.
