Not really. FG is closer to Crown than Wootton, but FG is Rockville.

Like I said, part of the issue is that some of the schools are so close together that some people who are close to one school will end up at another.

FG is not closer to Crown - its *maybe* almost equidistant but Wootton is closer and accessible via the Millenium Trail. Walking from Fallagrove to Crown has no designated walking routes - there's not even sidewalks on part of the road heading from Key West towards Rio and it requires crossing Shady Grove Road and Key West Highway during rush hour.

This, one can easily bike/walk from Fallsgrove to Wootton entirely on sidewalks, but no way bike/walk to Crown.

Yeah the SFH side is a quick bike ride to Wootton for sure. Only have to cross 28 and Wootton intersection and it is already well lit and has great crosswalks. They also have quick ride on buses to Fallsgrove because half of Wootton goes there for lunch

MCPS has FG as a walk zone to Crown in all 4 options.

What about the Wayside/Churchill people? Although they do have significantly more signatures, it seems they are hellbent on moving Wayside to Wootton considering it is in all four options. Hopefully these parents can make something happen. I live in Wayside area although my kids have already graduated. Just concerned Wootton isn't as desireable as Churchill despite everyone claiming it is ranked higher (like one slot higher? LOL)

Yes that is what I think. Honestly, Wootton is a fine school. Hopefully it will be rebuilt. Just grateful we will likely still zoned for a W school.

Creating a whole school magnet is counter to MCPS' desire to create more regional magnets.

That's the perfect way to avoid all split articulation! They can place those magnets in schools where the MS enrollments match the HS enrollment.

This is the only way for MCPS to figure out the programs and boundaries at the same time. It’s going to have to super simple and obvious. Everyone should get behind this, teach them a thing or two about simplicity.

People have made it abundantly clear these people don't care about overcapacity at QO, RM, Gaithersburg, or Northwest. Thankfully decisions aren't made by W cluster parents.

Option 1 has Crown pretty much at capacity by year 4 when all 4 years are zoned for it.

The rest of the options have it at about 300 to 500ish under capacity.

That’s because part of Wootton is rezoned there. But if you take them out, replace with a magnet program, it would be the best for everyone

Exactly, the board who'll be making these decisions in March will be made up of four Silver Spring residents, one resident each of Potomac, Rockville, and Germantown, and a Blair student.

It’s really the best option. A good magnet program strengthens the crown high school. Why force people in Churchill and Wootton to leave and cause so much stress and disruption? Especially for Wootton, the parts get split in all options are really the relatively poorer ones in Wootton and many have been affected by federal Reduction in Force and lost jobs this year. Life has been hard for them and why add another burden? Let people who want to be at crown to attend crown.

Seriously! Prior boards made a huge costly mistake with Crown and now they and MCPS staff are pushing to try and salvage the situation. We didn’t need another school when an addition at 4 high schools would have addressed capacity which was the primary reason for building it in the first place. Now you force disruption when most people of all SES prefer to be local to home.

Having an incredible magnet school would naturally pull kids from all over including W schools and it could be made equitable to have a strong population from upcountry and east county.

some of the HS don't have room for additions. But, even if they did, the cost of additions for 4 to 6 HS would be more than building one brand new HS. That's why building a home from scratch is often cheaper than renovating an existing.

Also, this would not address the MS capacity issues.

I'm with you, PP. I (and probably you) have no idea about the logistics and demand of making it a full-on magnet but I'd be for it if it works.

I think more realistic would be to put some magnets into MSs and HSs that have enrollments that force split articulation solutions. That is, if there are mismatches between the MSs going into a given HS, then either the MS or the HS could get a magnet that draws from a broader community to solve the mismatch. In addition to the split articulation issue, the enrollments of the magnets could adjust over time based on the population feeding to the school to avoid over/under utilization in the future (just bring in more/fewer people from outside the boundaries) in a given year. There's a bussing-cost issue with all magnets, I guess, but I think for HSs, this could be addressed by working with Ride On for good routes/timings (MS parents may balk at this though). And maybe building a parking garage or two for juniors/seniors who can drive.
