no normal people can afford disney
this is just like eliminating tax breaks in New York/New Jersey/California for state taxes. does not impact the vast majority of US families.
If DeSantis can punish a powerful company like Disney for crossing him, he can definitely do it to an ordinary family.
The thing is Disney did not cross him. He just went after them.
Anonymous wrote:Actually what DeSantis signed today was a REPEAL of last year's bill, which would have hiked Central Florida residents taxes by $1.2 billion, by transferring Disney's bond debt to them.
Monday’s law cancels the scheduled dissolution of a special taxing district for the 25,000 acres owned by Disney south of Orlando, which lawmakers passed and DeSantis signed into law over a three-day span last April.
The bill DeSantis signed into law Monday repeals last April’s Disney law and gives him and future governors the task of appointing the board for Disney’s taxing district, which was renamed the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. It otherwise leaves untouched the district’s ability to issue bonds to pay for improvements on Disney property.
The rest of DeSantis' show was one lie after another.
DeSantis said the new law puts Disney on par with all of the other Central Florida attractions: “Disney is going to be treated like SeaWorld is treated or like any of these others.”
That is also not true. While under a renamed board, Disney still has its own taxing district, which Universal Studios and SeaWorld, for example, do not. And because the district is a tax-exempt entity, a parking garage on Disney property does not have to collect sales tax, while those at the other theme parks do.

Well said. I completely agree.

This kind of idiot reductionist thinking is why we are in the situation we find ourselves today. No capacity for nuance or analysis. I am in favor of big business. I am also in favor of worker protections. You can have both, and a lot of the world already does.
But that doesn't really have much to do with the state seizing control of a regulatory structure that seemed to serve everyone pretty well until the state didn't like the business' viewpoint on one of the Governor's pet bills. I'm not in favor of that. It smacks of 1984 in a big way, and if you don't see or understand that then you are deluding yourself.
