This is getting worse every day, so it seems. There is a culture issue here. What is the best way to change the culture of the entire school, and all the students?

If you make it a whole school thing, then it minimizes the issue with the football program. The past 2 incidents were a direct result of kids on the JV football team. It's clear there's an issue with the football teams in Damascus. I say both JV and Varsity because the JV players will eventually move on to varsity. Start with the football program and the result will be felt across the school.

Also, this came up with the Rockville case. Why is a 20 year old man (who I realize is the victim here) attending HS with 15 year old girls?

Doesn’t Montgomery County have separate programs for adults?

Did the school inform parents that this was going on? Or did parents find out on the news? Possibly other victims?

Obviously there is a systemic problem with the JV Football program.

MCPS is broken system wide. You can choose a different cluster to live in other than Damascus but it doesn't mean your children will be any safer. There are no safe schools in MCPS.

So a kid was transferred? I do believe that MCPS cut the lines, sending kids in Clarksburg to Damascus. I know they transfer kids all the time - "making deals." That was a big thing in the DCC and NEC. A Kennedy kid would be sent to Springbrook, for example. It was a hot mess, but this wheeling and dealing was done behind the scenes.

I wish principals would stand up. It's devastating to schools when their own leaders are spineless. And yes, I do blame them as much as I blame teachers who are too fearful to speak up. I used to receive emails all the time saying, "We support you. You have a lot of support behind the scenes." yada yaday - But that did me no good. I'm one person.

But again, until the masses rise up, we will continue to abuse ourselves.

I think this can happen at any elementary school. Our school uses PBIS. We have assemblies and there is this huge, intricate reward system in place, but zero punishments. The kids know they can get away with all sorts of crazy stuff, and worst of all, there is a push for the other kids in the class (the ones who do actually pay attention and do work) to spend time talking about how they can help the kid who throws tantrums. Gimme a break.

We have a kid in DD’s ES class who throws chairs. He yells at the teacher. He has run out of the classroom. He has beat up other kids. He finished out last year and is back at the same school again this year. We have kids who cause issues on the bus. One kid did actually get taken off the bus for a few days, but then was allowed right back on and is causing trouble again. My other, younger DD has someone in her class who hit the teacher. Yes, he hit the teacher!

I wish we could go private, because I truly feel that MCPS does not care about my average kid learning and being safe at school.

My daughter's old school was horrible!!! 7 or 8 year olds molesting kids, fighting causing head injuries, kids running off property, cursing kids and staff out and throwing scary tantrums.
