No, the fact that Steele is "in hiding" proves he is most likely a Madoff-level scammer. Dropping off the grid renders Steele much more vulnerable to an actual threat to his safety from the Russians. Whereas staying very noticeable and public, "hiding in plain sight," so to speak, would provide him with much more protection. If Putin had him assassinated now, no one would know. Because he's gone already.

It's like if you think someone is following you to do you harm, you don't go into a dark deserted alley, you try to find some place with lots of light and lots of people.

So, no, no legitimate intelligence operate or ex operative practicing "tradecraft" would choose this moment to disappear if his concern was his personal safety. He would do the opposite: be as public and noticeable as possible. He would go on the news media shows and very publicly give interviews stating that he fears for his safety and if anything happens to him, Putin was the one who ordered the hit. Even if it looks like an accident (brakes failed or something).

On the other hand, financial scammers and con artists are the types who pull these kind of disappearing acts, and they do it all the time.

Steele was very useful to the intelligence agencies and media outlets who are now claiming he was a "reliable source" because he provided them all with easy plausible deniability. Steele could just sit down at his word processor and make up any old shit. If he had a bit of a conscience he might call one of his old cronies back in Russia and say "Hey man I need a source for some shit I am going to make up for a client. So I need you to make up some thing lurid about Trump. When I get paid I will give you 10%."

Or maybe Steele didn't even do that with this Trump nonsense. Maybe he just completely made the whole thing up. Wouldn't have been a problem except Trump got elected and somehow the thing got leaked to the point where it blew up on Steele. He can't back up anything, he knows how litigious Trump is, and he needs to hide to avoid the process servers that he knows are coming his way.

Also he probably committed any number of federal crimes in fabricating this stuff--mail fraud, wire fraud, and I'm sure there's a few other felonies in there too.

So that's why he vanished. Just like every other scammer who's about to be exposed as a scammer.

I might be missing something, but I can't see how the available evidence suggests that we give more credence to either one of these views. I haven't seen the FIFA report and I have no idea how good it was or how important it was, but the stories I've read never go beyond saying a report was produced and that the investigation, for whatever reason, caught some officials. I may be mistaken, but nothing says Steele's firm's report was especially key or even helpful. If Steele and co. were particularly adept at finding financial links in particular, that would be especially germane here.

And the first poster above is absolutely right about small time scammers around these businesses. Verification is tough, so it's easier than many think to put one past folks.

Are U me? I agree, except the salacious angle is important bc Russia may have been blackmailing trump so he adopts favorable policy positions, or they may be in a position to blackmail him in the future. Russia traditionally uses salacious material as leverage. That's important from a national security point of view.

So, he has one degree from Cambridge and one from Liverpool. That makes him unqualified? What is the shadowy nature of the intel? Aren't all intel "shadowy" - it's inherent in spying. Reporter doesn't require deep knowledge of what's in the dossier since the FBI has it.

My only point is that the reporting here isn't exactly upping my faith in any source.
