One student is hurt and another is in custody after a stabbing Tuesday morning in a high school in Calvert County, Maryland, the sheriff’s office said.
A school resource officer assigned to the school responded at around 11:18 a.m. to the cafeteria area of Patuxent High School in Lusby after a 15-year-old boy stabbed a 16-year-old boy in the arm and torso during a “physical altercation”, according to a preliminary investigation.

Who knows how it would have ended without he SRO.

Exactly! Listen to what the blair principal said about SRO. She was obviously non-commital. However, she did mention that the SRO who was removed (a woman) was part of the school community/family and knew everyone including the people at the nearby McDonalds.

This was at the PTA meeting (Tuesday evening)

No, we don't need SROs back and Black and Brown kids don't feel safe around them. We need more guards, counselors etc... and call the police when it is ABSOLUTELY necessary.
You want SROs back so Ian and Madison can feel safe. You could not care less about the well being of Black and Brown kids.
You are repeating the same old sad story like when y'all pretending you wanted school open in person for the well being of poor Black and Brown kids, please.

Stop making this about race. All kids deserve to feel safe, not just those of specific skin colors you choose as your talking points.

What is the difference if we have SRO's or security guards? They are basically the same thing. But, bottomline is they are NOT providing more funding for more security guards or counselors and the SRO's are probably funded by the police vs. MCPS.

And, bring in more security will make things physically safer but you still aren't addressing the underlying problems. Schools have counselors and security guards and are having these issues. There is more to it.

Then why are you so insisting on SROs? Especially since most minorities don't feel safe around them? Because you don't care about them. It's as simple as that.
Guards, counselors, therapists in; SROs out.

Show me a validated survey of Montgomery County residents that shows most people of color don’t feel safe about police in general or SROs in particular. Otherwise, you are talking out your ***.

I see you don't have kids in MCPS otherwise you would have known. You think the kids who spoke at the BOE regarding SROs are not valid? Oh, you probably didn't know about that.

I do. And he's been assaulted twice since school started. The kids who spoke at the BOE are valid but they are a tiny minority of students. They just happen to be very vocal. But they do not represent all students. Not in any way, shape or form.

If your child has been assaulted twice, TWICE since school started, why on earth wouldn't you want SRO's in the school. Or, better, why are you keeping your child at a school that they've been repeatedly assaulted and its only mid-November. There is no way my kid would go back after the first assault, let alone the second.

It's very important to remember that some people consider raising your voice at someone "assault".

If they were going to hire more mental health staff, they would have done it by now.

I do. What makes you think I don't? I'm the one who asked for the survey because someone on this thread thinks the kids at the BOE and the Council represent the majority of kids of color who don't want SROs at school. My kid is at a high school where most kids are not white. They definitely miss their SRO. And I know personally that school security is exhausted. The kids are a mess, which is understandable. But there are no new supports there. Just less. And even though everyone thinks hiring social workers is the panacea for all this, there is a huge labor shortage. The schools aren't going to get what they want. And the kids will be the ones who suffer.

These parents are pushing for social workers because they refuse to parent their kids and monitor and supervise them. Its easier to make it the schools problem than take responsibility as parents. Even if we bring back the SRO's which I hope they do, its not going to fix any of these problems as they are far greater than what some are making it out to be.

There has been no real survey on what parents/students want and that's why they cannot provide it. There was a survey done in some PTA's and our members voted one way and the people who attended the SRO meeting voted another way, with their own feelings. Social workers and security guards aren't going to fix this. But, let them keep thinking that.

Well, there are definitely a lot of parents who don't take responsibility. But there are also parents who can't. Two jobs, mental health/substance use issues, can't pay bills, domestic violence, whatever. And I feel for those parents. But I do need the schools to be safe. The SROs were a layer of safety. And it was a good program. It's unfortunate a few loud voices got rid of them. I personally don't let my teen make huge decisions like that. He gets to provide input, but I'm the adult. I wish our politicians would act like adults.

DP

This is MoCo! Where a high school student sits on the Board of Ed (the SMOB) and makes important decisions regarding SROs and Budgeting. So there is a teen making big decisions in this school system.

Politicians only care about votes, not our kids.

Part of it is parents taking responsibility, part of it is catching kids who are struggling in early elementary school and making sure they get what they need to be successful later on.
