why won't this thread die already? and yes i recognize the irony that i am continuing this thread by commenting on it. but seriously, the age change is happening and it is going to be whatever it is going to be for individual aug 1-dec 31 kids, as determined by each kid's individual club, so can we all just move on to arguing about other stuff?

No

My fall bday 2011 will be a 9th grader next fall, not a sophomore.
You keep trying though, you’ll get it eventually!

Yeah my oct 2011 will be a freshman
What the hell is this anyway….so dumb
Starting to think delusional August hater doesn't even have a kid playing soccer.

How could you butcher the age group table so many times, what 6, and not notice that your got it wrong for your own kid?

Can individual clubs choose a different date range? Or only the league they are part of?
It's the league the team for the club is in. Sometimes just before 11v11 some clubs will have entire teams play up for marketing purposes and to increase revenue by being able to expand the roster of the club's top team(s). I am not aware of a league other than MLSN1 that didn't pick 8/1-7/31 but they might certainly be out there.

Just so I'm clear, are you saying someone born in 2021 could be a senior in high school with the 2009s? They surely would qualify based on 8/1/2009 and younger.

Serious question - if this is all about grades. Why didn't they just make it grade year instead of using dates?

I'm saying that when SY is started this fall if playing up is allowed this means the lower bound of 7/31 is unnecessary. I dont know how you got that a 2021 could be a senior in high school. Everything is defined below.

11v11 = U18/U19 = 8/1/2008 and younger = Senior
11v11 = U18/U19 = 8/1/2008 and younger = Junior

11v11 = U17 = 8/1/2010 and younger = Sophmore
11v11 = U16 = 8/1/2011 and younger = Freshman
11v11 = U15 = 8/1/2012 and younger = 8th grade
11v11 = U14 = 8/1/2013 and younger = 7th grade
11v11 = U13 = 8/1/2014 and younger = 6th grade
9v9 = U12 = 8/1/2015 and younger = 5th grade
9v9 = U11 = 8/1/2016 and younger = 4th grade
7v7 = U10 = 8/1/2017 and younger = 3rd grade
7v7 = U9 = 8/1/2018 and younger = 2nd grade
4v4 = U8 = 8/1/2019 and younger = 1st grade
4v4 = U7 = 8/1/2020 and younger = kindergarten

Assuming we're trying to make soccer and school lineup exactly, and everyone younger than 2008 can be u18 then I assume everyone younger than 2008 could be a senior. Maybe a Doogie Howser type of situation.

Still butchered. Go back to the correct one to start over. You just keep compounding your own errors.

I like groups presented this way. Its easy to see how everything fits together. US Soccer is weird. They say that switching from BY to SY is happening so there will be less trapped players. Which is a grade in school issue. But then they dont include grade in school as part of their grouping matrix. Even worse they add in 7/31 which doesn't mean anything if players can play up.

Adding grade in school makes this so much easier to understand.

I do agree the Jul 31 date isn't needed. Why add it if players can play up? Seems odd.

Because if you don't have 7/31 then you will have a single tryout with 500 kids ranging from 8 year olds to 18. Might be harder for the club to manage? I can see the conflict.

Head coach: that 8 year old seems like he's got a lot of potential, we should put him on our top u19 team.
Assistant: don't you think he's too small and this could be dangerous?
Head coach: don't be silly, remember, the 7/31 lower bound is useless and isn't needed
Assistant: makes sense, should we put that sophomore in our u9 team? I think he will crush it
Head coach: there you go being silly again, the 8/1 upper bound is needed, it's just the 7/31 lower bound is not needed
