Depends on where you live. Rural America is hugely dependent on SNAP.

This story is about the cuts in the republican tax bill not cutting snap altogether. One store said 40% of sales were from SNAP

https://stateline.org/2025/06/02/gop-cuts-to-food-assistance-would-hit-rural-america-especially-hard/

SNAP accounts for approximately 12% of total grocery sales in the U.S., though this percentage can vary significantly by store type and location. For some stores, especially those in low-income areas, SNAP can represent a much larger share of revenue, sometimes exceeding 60%

This will certainly affect grocery store sales. Walmart is a big one. People will not “use their own money” when there isn’t any.

Yes, there is “their own money” it’s just spent on other things. If snap goes away people would shift how they spend (waste) their money

Things like electricity and housing? You are clueless about what it means to be poor in this country.

This. More than half of SNAP benefits use it for less than a year. 2/3 are off within 2 years. The people who are on for years? Mostly likely to be elderly or disabled. For most people it’s a bridge. SNAP benefits are paltry for most families.

Op-Ed from a mom today who’s been on it twice. The first time when her husband left her with her kids. The second time when she lost her job while her child had cancer.

People complain about her using a special matching program for farmers markets after stretching elsewhere to cover the essentials.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/29/opinion/snap-shutdown-food-stamps.html

I guess she should have sold her car when her husband left or when she lost her job or when her kid had cancer rather than sign up for SNAP. Maybe she can work for rations. Definitely needs to get rid of her phone and probably her TV.

The food stamp program has no nutritional standards, allowing participants to purchase any food or beverage product intended for consumption, except alcohol. As a result, data show that sizable portions of SNAP dollars purchase nonnutritious foods, such as sugary beverages and ultra-processed foods, which can lead to poor health.”

Are you kidding me with this list? More than half of the items on that list are “healthy”. I’ll grant you soft drinks are number one but 2 and 3 are milk and ground beef. The horrors!

Poor people can’t win. Buy soft drinks you’re a welfare queen. Buy peaches at a farmers market with matching funds to help local farmers, you’re a little too high and mighty.

Give me a break.

I mean I would much rather people be buying farmers market veggies vs candy lol.

You did an informal food drive? What does that mean?

Rich SAHMs who gave their unwanted food to a food pantry, and pretend they are helping people.

dp: It is helping people, and helping the food pantry survive a spike.

Sure. An “informal” food drive from pp and her friends are helping.

What did you drop off at the food pantry, pp?

DP. Dropped 2 paper bags of Cheerios, boxed milk, mac and cheese cups, peanut butter, tuna, crackers, granola bars, cans of soup, and other easy to eat meals. Also basic toiletries. I do this once a quarter and twice in last week because of shutdown. The org I donate too specifically asks for easy to “cook” processed foods for their clients who may or may not be able to cook.

How does SNAP fraud work, since we are on the topic of SNAP being used in ways that it shouldn’t be: you go to the store with your EBT card and purchase something now allowed, but the cashier at the store rings is up as a food purchase and allows you to use the card (usually ringing up the items at more than their actual price). This is typically done at the corner and conveniences stores, not the big box stores. The smaller store you are, the more you can get away with.

And one more way: you go to the store and you offer to purchase someone’s food with your EBT card and you give them your cash instead of them handing the cash to the cashier. Many times, to make the deal better, the person with the EBT will offer to take LESS cash for the purchase, just so they can get the cash. You have $100 in groceries, EBT cardholder will pay for your groceries and then have you give them $75. Tada! Fraud.

Wanna know how ‘illegals’ are getting SNAP? Their kids. Kids were born here, they are US citizens. Parent’s aren’t. Family of 5 with two adults that are not citizens by there children that are? They will get SNAP for 3 people, the children. And it is absolutely impossible for the adults NOT to eat from that SNAP money. So in a roundabout way, the ‘illegals’ ARE getting SNAP.

$9.2 billion per month on SNAP, every month. That’s what taxpayers pay. Not the government. The government doesn’t have any money. They take money from the taxpayer.

The kids get free breakfast and lunch from school, but Mom gets the money in her SNAP to pay for breakfast and lunch. The illegals that have 3 kids, they get food money for three kids who eat free breakfast and lunch at school. The taxpayers have to budget food costs and medical co-pays and health insurance premiums.

Wow they did a REALLY good job convincing you poor people and 'illegals' are your real enemy.

Poor people are not the enemy. Fraud that takes taxpayer dollars away from people who legitimately need help is the enemy.

What will happen if 40+ million people don’t get food stamps about 10 days from now? Total monthly benefits are just under $8 billlion.

In a few short days, 40 million people are going to lose access to other people’s money!!

sounds like a positive trend.

maybe that is why Trumps approval ratings are inching upwards.

Great, then you can stop having access to other people’s money too. You can pave your own roads, provide your own fire and police and military protection, eat unregulated and untested food, homeschool all your kids, work until 80, then pay full price out of pocket for outdated medical treatments and all your retirement costs. And don’t even think about flying or visiting national parks.

Different poster here.
You really don't understand the difference between all those things you listed, which benefit and are available to ALL residents, and direct funds that go straight into an INDIVIDUAL's pocket?

It would be available to you as well, thats the point of a social safety net. And as stated over and over, majority of SNAP recipients work. Including military personnel.

No, it's not available to me as well, because there is an income requirement.

There is no income requirement to drive/walk/bike on roads
There is no income requirement for police and military protection
There is no income requirement to consume regulated and tested food
There is no income requirement for public school.
These are available to ALL residents.
Food stamps are not.

But I guess you answered my initial question. You do not understand.

RIGHT! IF YOU MADE UNDER THE INCOME REQUIREMENTS IT WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO YOU.

Everyone cant go to all national parks. You need to have the money to fly or drive, lodging or camping equipment. Thats an income requirement. Do you have the same issue with subsidized or sliding income-based passes to national parks?
Not all neighborhoods have local fire and EMS that can respond in less than 10 minutes- do you? Thats because you live in a well-funded community.
Not all public schools have the same resources.
Not all communities have walking paths or bike paths or sidewalks because they are expensive to build and maintain.

RIGHT. FOOD STAMPS HAVE AN INCOME REQUIREMENT AND ALL THE OTHER THINGS YOU LISTED DO NOT.
Yet, you apparently do not understand that they are not the same. Ignorant.

There are other requirements besides income. School has age requirements. Police and fire protection are only provided in the event of an emergency. Like SNAP, they’re a safety net.

Homemade carrot ginger soup, very cheap to make with carrots from Aldi (about 1.50 for a package), onions (1.50 from aldi), powdered ginger, and homemade broth (I save all my veggie scraps so basically free), plus a homemade roll (also super cheap to make).

Later on kid and I will enjoy a dinner of pasta and and more "slop", batch cooked pasta sauce from the freezer (base of canned tomato sauce plus ground beef, spices, as well as some other veggies I had laying around that I "snuck" in after roasting and pureeing, carrots, peppers, and onions).

I’ll take “Things Which Never Happened” for $1000, Alex.

You don’t think people batch cook from scratch and then eat the things they made?

Do your kids hate pasta by now?

Serious question what kid would not like to have pasta with meat sauce in the meal rotation??

There is a "rotation" there? Like differently shaped pasta?
