We sent in an appeal with a GBRS of 15. Test scores were low but psychologist said committee, through extensive comments and high GBRS, is trying to say child belongs at center. Child is only one in class doing extra projects. Cogat 108, Naglieri 117, WISC V- 121. Seemed like no acceptance to me, but teachers and psychologist days this is unusual case. One three on report card. Almost all 4's for two years. Working above grade level in math and reading. This is a case where the ability and desire to produce is very high while some kids get the test scores, but don't produce. I don't expect appeal to work, but it is supposed to be a wholistic program, not a gifted program. He has to be given extra work constantly. Teacher says he was perfect candidate. GBRS in first grade was 14. Committe doesn't get that score of course.

On appeal they look at the whole file, just like they did the first time. They'll look at what was submitted pre-appeal and post. It's also a different set of eyes.

I don't think they're that great but you paid for the WISC so try. I just don't see a 123 doing it and there are no stand out sub scores.

If her FSIQ is 142, yes. Decent chance. Add some more work samples too, to be sure.

additionally, I don't feel my kid is adequately challenged in the general curriculum. Easily gets work done (homework and in class), straight 4s, extremely high VCI but not exceptionally high on overall test numbers, so looking to figure out how best to prove my kid is a good fit for AAP.

16:53 - I do have items - but not sure if I'm submitting the correct things. Some of the items that my kid creates are books that are multiple pages long that don't really translate well to the required format. Also, some of the things my kid does is often thinks of things in a different and thought provoking way and is always inquisitive and asking questions - I don't always have this in paper form.

If you have a child who is very clearly bright, you will have those work samples and know them when you see them. For that reason, I find this question odd on these boards. I have two in AAP and I knew when each one wrote something out that was surprisingly advanced, it was obvious. Think of something that shows your child as being above peers in his out of the box thinking.

Yes, if this math work demonstrates advanced thinking. If samples are just lot of arithmetic operations, it does not add value.

Oh please, with that WISC she's definitely in - the NNAT and Cogat weren't really low either. They were pretty good.

They have a few sentences in there

In our school they had GBRS for K and grade 1, but no commentary. I was surprised to see a huge variation in GBRS b/n Grades 1 & 2, especially given that GBRS for Grades 1 is recorded at the end of the year. This convinced me that GBRS is very subjective.

Everyone keeps suggesting submitting good work samples with the appeal. Any suggestions on things that are good work samples? I've looked through the stuff that's come home from school and none of it seems right based on the criteria they list on the site. I'm going to have to come up with an activity to generate some work samples. Any recommendations? I want this to be the work of my kid - I just need an idea to get them going.

Those NNAT and COGAT percentiles are not "low." She will get in. My child got in first round with those percentiles.
