Pretty likely.

All America is at the same time, as well.

I hope the VA team is more competitive than it was last year (if girls see this as more desirable than All America).

Unfortunately, I don’t think the objective is to put together a truly competitive team. This does not make sense to me, but it seems to be true.

It definitely appeared to be the objective of several of the other regions. I don't believe it was a talent deficit. DD told me the other regions said that they practiced together starting after selection. You can see on the Am Select page that many have coaches named already, etc. Not yet for DC/VA.

It is perplexing. I would think Stars and Pride and whomever else would have their top players trying out to compete with the Long Island, Maryland and other teams out there. Looked like a really fun tournament last year. Hope the top VA kids give it a hard look.

Money grab. The good Pride players should try out for team Maryland. The DC team can be the rest of Stars.

That would be ideal, but many of the top players from a lot of these areas don't try out. Especially at this age. Many believe the selection process is political. It's a very expensive event plus travel for a few extra games (possibly with a lot of "me ball") at the end of a busy lacrosse season. And there are other events and camps to choose from. For example, most I have spoken to agree that Best in Class is a much better experience for your money.

If there are those out there that believe Best in Class isn't political either, there's a bunch of swamp land in Florida available for you.

I’m not sure who is at fault, overbearing parents or the event organizers, but somewhere along the lines these events have been promoted as necessary for college recruiting. Parents have bought into this thought leading to the FOMO, which plays right into the hands of the event organizers who are in this to make money. I’m not aware of any college player who has pointed to these events as the primary reason for their commitment to a college program.

This has been mentioned previously. Players on top club programs who get the exposure to college coaches through their tournament games don’t need these events. Yet, they are the ones running to sign up. It’s at best a feel good moment for them making the team, but more so they are driven by the FOMO. I know many players who have gone on to play for top D1 programs, none have pointed to these events as the reason for their recruitment.

Also mentioned previously, there could be an argument for players on clubs who do not get exposure to college coaches through tournaments to do these events. This makes more sense, but again, the players on top clubs who already have the exposure are the ones taking spots on the teams. Parents and event organizers have conditioned them to worry about the FOMO.

FOMO is a great selling tactic by these event organizers and leads to a nice money-maker for them.

Shhh! Don't ruin it for those of us who "forget" to pay. Don't want word leaking out

I'm willing to wager 50% don't pay and they still make a killing on parking.

This is not a great take for a couple of reasons. I'll focus on the first one. "Money grab" gets thrown around a lot on these threads. Kind of a meaningless phrase on its own.

The opportunity to make a profit is the only reason that these tournaments exist and provide opportunities for our kids. It costs money to rent facilities, hire referees, provide trainers, security, etc. It is not realistic to expect there to be some non-profit consortium working to organize these complicated events, right? If you are saying that this particular event does not provide the value for the money, then some facts to back up that statement would be warranted.

One caveat, if you were referring to the outrageous daily parking charges at DE Turf Complex, than I agree strongly...

Yeah, it’s a money grab but if the VA kids want to play against the best we should put our all stars together to play the best. Would be exciting to watch.

Agree that it would be exciting to watch the best players in the area play together, but I disagree that it's a "money grab".

I fully understand why some very good players/families chose not to try-out/participate at the tail end of a busy summer season for the 2028s (6 tournaments). And there were certainly no college coaches watching middle school.

That said, from my perspective, it was a great experience for my DD to play with different and talented players outside of her club, and against the best from other regions. If more girls come out this year as it gets closer to high school years and the recruiting process, and there is some additional effort to practice together in advance, DC-VA region will be very competitive.

(Maryland didn't win it at any age level last year, by the way; their top players seemed to pick Athletes Unlimited last year.)

Agreed. Not about competition
