Depends on the state school. UVA is the best school in the South, so it probably is.
Which south are we talking about? The one with Duke, Vandy, Rice and Emory?
Vandy, Rice, and Emory all trended down this year, UVA trended up and isn't stopping anytime soon. Duke is just a basketball school.
UVA trended up to the #5 public.
It’s obvious that a troll is deliberately trying to make UVA look bad.
It's all about momentum. You want your kid to end up at a school that will continue paying off 10, 20 years down the road. UVA is only going up, and based on potential it's the best school in the South. I'm not saying it's the best school everywhere, just the South, which I think is more than reasonable. The extremely loyal alumni base helps kids get top jobs and opportunities anywhere in the country, not just the South. It's law and business schools are also by far the best in the South. Not sure what there is to discuss here.
+1. UVA also rose from 25 to 24 overall in the nation.
But are being outdistanced by the Big 3 publics and now UNC.

Maybe you need to braoden your social circle?
I get it, but in reality, at Michigan, virtually every single program/department within the University is top 10, or even top 5 in the country. UVa cannot come close to saying the same thing.
The UVA boosters in the forum really need to take a step back.
On the west coast, Michigan is considered around the level of Berkeley and UCLA. UVA is not, though I can’t speak for the south. No one would think of it as equivalent to a lower tier Ivy here.
Are you an authority or Expert™️ of some sort? On what evidence do you base your claims?

I have a kid at a school that most people here would sneer at and which doesn't get ranked highly by USNWR but my kid is in a selective admit program there that is consistently ranked at the top for those programs. Should she have instead gone to a top ten school that didn't offer the program or which offers it but where the program is clearly inferior?
Totally agree. I find all this bickering about the rankings amusing. You all know nothing actually changed about these schools between last year and this year, right? But USNWR changes their formula and get all these people in a flutter about it.
One of my kids is at a big school that went up in the rankings (according to the discussion here, I didn't look it up) and another is at a small school most people don't know. Both have excellent programs for the things they want. USNWR played zero role in where they applied or chose to go.
USNEWS is extremely damaging and schools should opt out.

I believe that UVA being a (not "the") top public is accurate. No one I know believes any more than that about UVA.

Yea, but US News has decided to use 6 year graduation rates.
That’s because most students at schools like UVA opt into the easier majors. The harder disciplines, such as Engineering, often take a bit longer to complete.
Why would an engineering degree take more than 4 years? It sounds like the college is failing these kids.

Please save your ammo for Wake, William & Mary, Tulane, Tufts, NYU, etc. Who dropped like a stone. Drop it like it’s hot!
Ha.

I agree about momentum - and with that, expect Rutgers to move past UVA over the next ten years. Big move this year for RU. Something special is happening in New Brunswick, and people are noticing - so much more potential than UVA based on proximity to high level employment (location), progressive thought, and education level/ base.
