Not PP. Our AART said that GBRS is an annual thing for FCPS students. Guess only the specific one for that year will be submitted for AAP consideration.

So they do GBRS rating for all the students in K & 1st, and keep it in case the students get in the pool in 2nd grade?

12:13 what part of GBRS is compiled in kindergarden and 1. I only saw comments from the 2 grade teacher that were then reviewed by the panel.

There is a "GBRS" score sheet which has four categories with 8-10 of the characteristics they are looking for to help identify kids for the program.

The ratings (from 1-4) are scaled by behaviors witnessed in class. Then those scores HAVE to be supported, in writing, with specific examples on the GBRS Commentary Sheet - regardless of whether they are high scores or low scores. If the teacher doesn't see it, she doesn't see it. It does not mean that your child does not ever demonstrate some of these behaviors. They just are not apparent in the classroom, by this teacher, for whatever reason.

If you are questioning your child's GBRS, you need to look at the commentary so that you at least have some idea of what you are arguing about and appealing.

Of course the second grade teacher is going to have to provide most of this because she/he is the person who spends the most time with your child. Is she biased? Maybe, to some extent. Aren't we all? But every child is discussed, at both the local screening and central screening and those members have to sign off on the evaluation. Noone's child is downgraded because their parents didn't volunteer in the classroom, nor will that get your child accepted into the program.

All the posters talking about "I heard this" and "I heard that" have no idea what goes into this. Its all garbage. People hear and believe whatever suits them at the time.

Is the system perfect? No, of course not. But what system is? Its not going to change, so you need to find out how the information about your child was collected and explained if you want to question it. There is no crime in questioning it or offering other information for the committees to consider.

In my experience, and I do have some for those wondering, the professionals involved - and they are professionals - try to do their best to be fair to each child.
They are looking to give eligibility to as many children as they feel comfortable qualifying.

I hope if you had concerns that you appealed the initial decision so that a different set of eyes has a chance to review you child's information.

Usually, that is all it takes if a candidate was questionable.

I heard that the 2nd grade teachers receive 'short briefing' before the GBRS rating.
I doubt there's serious training for spotting gifted kids.
If the teacher is new to 2nd grade in FCPS, I wonder how much she/he would be consistent with other teachers in rating.

I have sympathy for the second grade teachers. not have a streamlined process puts not just just the kids, but them also a disadvantage.

At my DC's school, AART doesn't want to get involved at all.
No advice no quidance no help nothing. For GBRS and package, seems like she just collects the papers from the teacher, and summit it to the committee.
Probably had some bad experiences in the past from pushy parents or something.

And my DD's teacher didn't even give definative answers to my questions about her ratings.. she says my kid is an average where she does advance math and la within the classroom..

I am not reakky satisfied with GBRS process with the given weight it has int he whole AAP selection process.

I find it interesting that this process of the original screening file is not the same across the county. Sounds like some classroom teachers do it all and some AART do it all and then at some schools it is a committee that does it together.

2nd grade teachers at our school put together the GBRS and supporting package. It goes through a nominal review w/ AART and other 2nd grade teachers before being passed on the screening committe.
