Why are so many nurses and nursing home workers unvaccinated? They are at the front lines and seeing all this, and still they don't want the vaccine?
A surprisingly high percentage of nurses are into woo and alternative medicine. There are nurses in my family, and they are always talking about this stuff. At work, they provide the standard of care, but they are not themselves scientists, and many don't have four-year degrees or advanced degrees. They might know a lot about how COVID presents and have experience treating people with COVID, but they don't necessarily know anything more about vaccines than anyone else. Nursing home staff are generally less-educated people who aren't making very much money (one reason it spread so badly in nursing homes is that many workers have to work at more than one home to make ends meet, so they were carrying it from home to home).
They are not a full nurse if they don’t have a 4 year degree.
Um, no. They are not REGISTERED nurses without a 4 year degree.
What? You absolutely do not need a BSN to be a REGISTERED nurse (RN). You can do a 2 year associates nursing degree, pass the nursing exams, and voila - you are an RN. Now many nursing jobs do require a BSN, but you don't need one to be an RN.

Nurse here. You should see all my coworkers who get into multi-level marketing. They are easily influenced by smooth talkers who promise riches through Avon. Or they once had some reaction 27 years ago to a flu vaccine and have declared that they are allergic to ALL vaccines.

Are you kidding? Paid firefighting is one of the most competitive industries there is. You basically have to be related to a current firefighter to even have a chance to get hired.
I’d like to see DC get some of those crazy kids who ride ATVs into firefighting. They’d probably be great if given the opportunity to use their risk-taking for a better purpose.

Extremely competitive and the fact that so many firefighters are related to others is one of the reasons large diverse cities often do not have diverse fire departments. As mentioned upthread, few even live in DC.
Of course, if a large number do quit, it would be a chance to diversify the department...

I do not routinely say this because it sounds really mean, but nurses, EMTs, etc. generally believe a lot of bunk and health/medicine mumbo jumbo. Obviously not all of them, but enough.
On what do you base this conclusion? It sounds like you personally know many, many nurses, EMTs and other people in the allied health professions. Have you worked in an emergency room for several years? Or are there opinion polls that have been taken comparing the various professions?
I work in a hospital (pharmacist) and I'd love to get my hands on this kind of data.

That's not how a nursing license works. You can be an RN licensed by the state with a community college degree.

No, not a chance.
Most don't live anywhere near DC. My cousin is a retired firefighter. He lives in Stafford, VA. His colleagues lived in W. Virginia, Fredricksburg, etc. They do 3 day shifts so it's easy to live really far.
+1...it is part of the housing affordability issue. The royal 'we" really need to do something that ensures our first responders, teachers etc can live in DC proper.
completely disagree. it's fine for moderate-income workers to not live in the city. This particular group of guys wants a politically conservative zip code and no amount of gov't subsidized 3-bedroom homes in Shaw will induce him to live on the street with the Pride parade.
