PP again who made the personal stylist recommendation - I am short and short-waisted, so it's really hard to find clothes that me and it was nice to have someone push things on me that I ever, ever would have thought would look good on me. I never wore slim pants because I thought they accentuated my very round stomach and butt, but it turns out if I wear them with a short blazer, it is very slimming. I always went with wide or straight leg pants and longer jackets, I must have looked so dumpy!

I usually just order a bunch from Nordstrom and see what works, but you could try to work with a stylist there.


I am also a fat mom who shops at Nordstrom (public school though, LOL). I've had great luck with their personal stylists who were very helpful in finding things that fit my [very hard to fit] body. The free tailoring is very, very helpful.

Of the brands that PP mentioned, I really, really like Vince Camuto and NYDJ tops and Lafayette 148 stretch wool pants.

OP here. This is my issue. DC just started an at expensive private school, and I don't fit in. I mean, I never will, but I'd rather not look sloppy in front of them.


Do your best to look polished and not sloppy. Do your hair, put on make up every day. Do your nails or go get them done. If you can afford it, get a nice designer handbag, invest in nice shoes. Find a couple of uniforms that you feel confident in. Before you go to school events, or if you can afford them regularly, get blowouts - makes so much of a difference. I say all this from experience. I get regular blowouts, invest in a few nice outfits and designer shoes and bags. I don't feel as confident dropping off my son with a messy bun and flip flops.


Hair and makeup goes a LONG way. My housekeeper was very obese (has since had bypass and lost tons). She came to work in leggings and athletic type tops, but her hair and makeup always looked perfect. I always thought she looked beautiful, partly because it was clear she put effort into her appearance

I totally understand, OP, but I will say that in addition to looking nice, 95% of this is about your confidence. Go in with a smile, be outgoing, own it, and you will make friends! I was you and this past year I made a real effort to reach out to other moms and try to plan things for my very shy daughter, and I am naturally an outgoing person, so I let go of my hangups about my weight and was just myself. I made a couple of really good friends (one of whom is, seriously, a fitness influencer with thousands of followers on instagram).
