I have an online friend who named her kid this. Never knew how to pronounce it but I think I've figured it out from this thread.

+1. Bunch of Americans desperate to out-Irish each other. So annoying.

LOL

I went to grad school with someone who was from Wisconsin. She had been very sheltered in a small town so she hadn't been exposed to lots of things like Major League Soccer. If she hadn't heard of a thing- she assumed it didn't exist. You all remind me of her.

Political associations of the name exist. OP should go for it if they want but you can't deny facts.

Why would you name your kid something you don’t want to call them?

I’d probably end up calling her “Seerse”

Please do not go with Sisi, unless you are keen to link your child to an Egyptian dictator...

I guess you could use Sheri.

And here we have an answer to the "Do people know how to pronounce it?" question.

The word is literally used as the name of a political bulletin of a splinter group of Sinn Fein but OK. Google it.

So, picture this-really happened.

Mom brings red headed toddler to church nursery. Volunteer sees name tag- Saoirse- and asks, how do you say it?

Mom says 'seer sha'.

Volunteer now knows name. It was pretty simple and straightforward. I'm the volunteer, and it's a pretty name.

I've seen Irish names before, I can't believe how some in this thread have never seen the not-totally-uncommon names talked about here. Maybe it's because I'm from NE and there are Irish folks there? But really, if I don't know a name, I just ask. Where I live now, there is a large ethnic group that I am not as familiar with and sometimes I just ask if I am saying a name right.

This name is lovely and not remotely controversial. This thread is absolutely mind boggling.

Given OPs posts, is it possible SHE doesn’t know how to pronounce it? Perhaps she likes the vowels and consonants thing but couldn’t figure it out so she started a thread for folks to explain it? And now that she’s seen it’s a shitshow she’s gonna choose something else.

I don’t like it.
