Optional is a great approach because it allows each parent to do what's best for their child, In the end, masking will have very little effect on spread in schools because 1) there are so many mitigations in place at schools 2) as shown last year there is very little spread in schools 2) Masks are simply not proven to prevent virus from escaping or being inhaled its just the only thing we have for the unvaccinated that make us feel any kind of hope.

Masks can have other effects on children especially given that we are going into the 2nd full year of possible wearing them. This is not a short term solution at this point.

No, it's not. What is thoughtful is ensuring that you are taking every practice to ensure you and your precious little child do not spread the Delta variant. This requires wearing masks. MASKS ARE PROVEN TO PREVENT THE VIRUS FROM SPREADING. The CDC says this in no uncertain terms. I recommend you consider homeschooling for your darling one.

The best for your own kid argument only works when it's something that can't effect others. If I decide that it's best for my kid to not treat them for lice and send them to school, but it's okay because it's what's best for my kid and your can always wear a cap to protect their hair. Totally absurd, right? So is your argument.


100% agree with immediate PP - masks are the ONLY mitigation strategies being considered, at least at our school. Thus it's really important that everyone masks. Can't believe some of these responses.

What other mitigation’s do you think schools are doing? I think you are misinformed. Most schools have a very loose interpretation of CDC guidelines (counting a whole grade of 60 kids as a single cohort, etc)

Who do you think you are speaking for? You might find your “we” is smaller than you think.

You are doing nothing to combat the stereotype of the judgmental conservative Catholic, what with the shaming people and “you’re a bad mom” bit. It sounds like you exist in a bubble where you only spend time around those who think like you. Parents of children at Catholic schools have a diversity of opinions. That must really bother you.

our school took a poll -- i voted for masks, but no social distancing (it's too hard for kids). i know a couple of others who also took it and also voted for masks.

I am sure that a system to manage that would make it very easy. That said, last year our school never managed to get the daily health check (temperature, symptoms, etc.) uploaded into a system/deploy an app. We had to use paper forms the entire year. Therefore I am skeptical about their ability to get any sort of automated tracking system up and running.

+1000 Our school (Holy Spirit) sent a survey recently as well, asking whether or not we think masks should be mandatory or optional (I believe that was the wording). I put mandatory and hope that it the option the school goes with. Aside from being the safest option at this point, it also doesn't require the policing of vaccination status. We were very successful last year with the use of masks and distancing so I hope that those making this decision take that into account. Finally, fwiw, my child will be participating in some back to school activities within the school and has been instructed to wear a mask. I might be reading too much into it but this could be an indication that they are learning towards masks required for the upcoming school year.


I'm glad your school is polling parents. I hope ours will as well. Its great for each individual school community to have a choice. And in these small k-8, with only 2 grades eligible for vaccinations it shouldn't be too hard to get a handle on the vaccinations status of the kids.
