There are many communities across this country that don't have "stupid young men" (your words) shooting people and committing crimes. Many families of all races, ethnic groups, and income levels work hard to instill solid values and raise kids who don't commit crimes. My husband and I don't have a gun but don't think it's just a gun problem. It's largely due to parents who give birth but don't parent their children who too often commit violent crimes.

If they didn't have easy access to guns, there would be fewer deaths and no innocent bystanders.

This alleged “easy access” already violates multiple existing laws. Why aren’t the people responsible in jail?

Imagine if people weren’t paid public benefits in a way that encourages irresponsible parenting.

Imagine if the public benefits system didn’t discourage fathers living with their families.

Imagine if instead of being used to perpetuate misery, public funds were used to promote family stability, a reasonable facsimile of monagomy, school programs that educate in practical skills instead of the latest social activism and non-violence.

Imagine if career violent criminals got taken out of circulation long enough for them to age out of the violent age demographic and receive intensive therapeutic interventions.

There are 400 million guns out there. Even if 90% were turned in / recovered by door-to-door ATF searches, there'd be more than enough for street crews to kill each other with.

The number of guns has gone up, and the government's unconstitutional abridgement of the natural right to keep and bear arms has decreased, and yet rate of gun murders overall have been on a steady decline until the last year.

When you control factors like gun laws and number of guns in circulation, and change factors like law enforcement activity, you have a natural experiment.

Believe the science.

It's not guns sold, or even gun laws. It's policing. It's consequences. It's keeping violent, impulsive men off the streets until they're less impulsive and less violent.

Cops were on the scene very quickly.

Thankful for the quick police response!

The Republicans have to move on the gun debate. But at the end of the day, the most important factor by far in explaining disparities in all manner of life outcomes (poverty, unemployment, crime, education) is whether you were born out-of-wedlock. And we all know the statistics are not pretty. Until the Democrats are willing to have a conversation about this, the gunfire will continue.

Agree. There is a obvious correlation between high out-of-wedlock birthrates and poverty, and in turn crime. Until Democrats are willing to acknowledge that, instead of pointing fingers at "Republicans," things will never get better.

And the blood isn't on the hands of every Republican in this country. Your hate is showing. The blood is on the hands of the lowlife(s) who did the shooting. (And before you come out with the racist accusation, I have no clue as to whether the shooter(s) were black or white.)

England and Canada don’t have these gun deaths . GOP = Guns. GOP is trying to allow 18-20 yr olds to buy Guns, which will only lead to more gun deaths and suicides. GOP = slowly destroying our country.

Yes, but they would rather control women's reproductive choices than make meaningful changes. Trapping women in marital contracts and forcing them to have children won't impact the gun violence in US.

I’ve heard two radio commercials for some massive gun show this weekend in Virginia.

We should have a DCUM meet-up to shut it down.

In the past week, there was a shooting at Nats stadium, several shootings in SE where a one small child was killed and then last night at 14th street by one if DC’s most popular restaurants. And that’s what I know of the top of my head.

Stay safe everyone. And hug your loved one tights.

Is the increasing push for criminal justice reform to less punitive and morerestorative justice focused and with with reduced sentences (Youth rehab act, Racine pushing not to sentence teens as adults, etc), that is also product of amorphous equity goals (mainly by liberals), making the city less safe? I understand the disparate impact statistics in crime are so bad and there has been egregious police brutality in the past. However, there has also been a massive anti-police sentiment in the last few years and instructions to reduce disparate impact. The city council seems to have pushed polices where teens know they get a slap on the wrist and go back on the streets.

Is anyone worried it will get a lot worse and then we will clamp down again on crime as was done in the 90’s? What does all this tell us? First, guns are bad. Second we need to also respect the law.
