The problem is the nanny market has changed so much in the past 18 months. I’m a nanny in LA and I’m seeing jobs for $30-40/hr. Now the $35.hr jobs that looked good before, look low now. I’m paid $35/hr and did remote learning this year, which was so much easier than infant twins. Nannies right now know they can get $30/hr for elementary kids with guaranteed hours because of possible lockdowns. They don’t want $25/hr for twins. I know the pay in LA is higher but I’m just throwing that out there, because I’ve been a nanny for 25 years and the job right now are crazy, some are $50/hr if you have a teaching background. I think on October once all the ‘good’ jobs are filled, you’ll have better luck.

Nanny here/ I’m sorry but $25/hr for 9 month twins is extremely low, plus not having 2 weeks actual vacation and cameras is a no way. I can earn $25/hr with a single 7 year old or $30/hr with a newborn. Why would I do twins for $25/hr?

I quit my job. We have a kindergartener and infant twins too. Not ideal but it the only way we could financially make it work.

When my sister had to go back to her teaching job after her maternity leave, the stay at home mom next door offered to watch the baby for a very reasonable cost. My sister jumped on the offer.

PP is right -- there is always a mom or 2 in the neighborhood who would love to earn some extra cash.

This is one of those problems with no good answer. Let me know if you figure it out!

We had twins and a baby - 3 kids in 19 months. I ended up going to work part-time, getting a part-time nanny for the baby, and sending the twins to day care -- they were 2 by the time my maternity leave was over. I think if you can get the bigger kid into day care it will be easier to find a nanny. If I had it to do over again, I would have stayed full time, gotten a full-time nanny for the baby, and negotiated a couple of work-from-home days just to save commuting time. Obviously none of this is great.

It is an impossible situation and consumes all your thinking. I sympathize. Good luck to all of us.

Right you’re obviously not a parent or multiples. This is damn near impossible to sustain. The babies themselves are enough on their own without adding in someone else’s kids. I would SAHM but it would be extremely difficult to re-enter my line of work later on so I’m just to keep working and pay the nanny.
