I am a paraeducator at an MCPS elementary school. Admin asked me three times to work summer school and I said no each time. I appreciate that they are trying hard to fill spots and that there are kids who truly need summer school, but after the last school year and a half of distance learning and hybrid learning, I need a break. My own kids will have my full attention this summer, and I'm also taking time to see family we haven't seen in a very long time. I tutored CARES students before school for much of the school year, and when we reopened I took on additional hours to help support students. Many of my colleagues also took on extra hours this year, and all of us put in countless hours of training time. It's time for a break and I know many others feel the same way.

There is a financial incentive for teachers for summer school but none for support staff, and as some have tried to say on this and other threads, the cost of childcare makes working summer school either a financial wash or a money losing experience for some of my fellow staff members. On top of that, school staff and teachers have spent the last year hearing both, "Teachers are essential workers!" and "Teachers are lazy freeloaders who should all be fired!" It's hard to take on summer work for little or no pay after a difficult year filled with hateful comments from many parents and community members.

This is incorrect. It is our hourly salary rate (minus the usual 33% FICA, FED, and MD tax but with no other deductions) plus they add an extra $200 (33% removed again). Roughly 5 to 6 hours of work a day, but you are not allowed to have any days off during that time. So, it only really works for teachers that have no other commitments or childcare issues. Most staff prefer to focus on a mix of required training, taking state mandated grad classes to keep our teaching certificate, relaxing, home improvement, vacations, and childcare.

Some of us are going back to teach full-time in person on July 12th!

It sounds like not much summer school will be happening because the crappy DL platform burnt out the teacher population as well.

Weren't all the teachers just phoning it in from Puerto Vallarta or Cancún?

I'm sure that's taxing as well. It's largely soul crushing no matter where you do it from.
