Not to state the obvious (surprised no one has mentioned it more than once) but Virginia Tech has a massive alumni network in the DC area, name recognition, sports, great for STEM, etc. I have never lacked for jobs or connections and had such a blast there. Truly don’t know anyone who didn’t love it.

Those days are gone - a 1260 won’t cut it at Wisconsin. But kid could now go test optional and get in if GPA is high.

My nephew (with good but not grades/test scores) wanted a big sports experience and His parents agreed to send him to any school where he enough aid that the final cost was similar to being in state. He applied to multiple SEC and Big 10 schools to see where he would get the best package. He ended up going to the University of Kentucky honors college, but was also weighing offers with a lot of money for the University of South Carolina, Ohio State, Minnesota, and Michigan State.

I went to one of your schools listed and haven't lacked for jobs during my career. Yes it was a party school, but with 50k kids, surely you realize that there's A LOT of students not partying. I personally had the best 4 years of my life, lots of football championships and partied. Still got an excellent education. I would encourage my kids to go to a large state college because there's something for everyone.

BTW, I graduated 10 years ago and no one got in with only a 1300s SAT. I had a 1480 and that was the low end.

I know several classmates who got into Purdue last year and the year before with 1200-1300 SAT scores. Pretty cheap for OOS! (w/o merit aid)
- University of Kentucky and Alabama are pretty generous with merit.

Yeah, really weird that a Christian school would include Jesus. In other shocking news, there' a Catholic chapel at Georgetown Univ and they require 2 theology courses as part of their core curriculum. How weird is that.


At Baylor it’s everywhere on the website. Bizarre.

I'm not sure Wisconsin as #1 US Party school is really the best fit for him, but figure it is a big school and he is likely to find his people. He has requested a dorm that are NOT considered a loud party dorm. Perhaps your kid will do the same. Fingers crossed, but also knowing transferring out is always an option!


They have come down in the rankings. When I was there, they had an asterisk that they didn't rank professionals.

Just because it is a party school doesn't mean EVERYONE parties all of the time. There are a lot of very serious students there and they all work hard. The town and the college spirit because of the sports are second to none.


Right - no one should mistake “party school” for “slacker school” when it comes to Wisconsin or similarly situated colleges. Wisconsin is the definition of a “Work Hard Play Hard” school. It has a great party scene, but people also take their academics seriously (or else they’ll flunk out).

I don't think there's anything wrong with a parent being concerned that their student is more interested in parties than academics. I feel the same way. "I like X school because it has a great Chem Department" sounds way better to me as a parent than "I like X school because it's got a great party scene." -- signed, a Wisconsin grad who never partied but was super happy there.

I don’t think he necessarily got into better schools, but definitely equivalent schools in the same ballpark as Wisconsin. Unfortunately, son really wanted Wisconsin. Accepted at Wake Forest, VT, Richmond, Syracuse, Tulane, U Florida. Headed to Tulane.
