The friends my kids made--most of their parents spoke English. The ones that didn't were just as nice and still came to the birthday parties and thanked me in beginners English for inviting their child. My neighbors range from Feds, to district-level administrators, to IT folks, and everything in between. The cars in my neighbors yards range from older Accords, to Teslas, to the smaller MCFRS truck that belongs to my firefighter neighbor to brand new Audis--your average middle class neighborhood.
The "crappy schools" that my kids attend are filled with strong teachers that made lasting connections with my kids. Circling back to community, my children are six grade levels apart and both have had the same teacher in fifth grade. They also had the same administrator in elementary school, and Title I schools = smaller class sizes in the lower grades, so they benefitted from that. In middle and high school, school choice is a thing here. Both are thriving in their respective advanced/honors and AP (for the oldest) classes. A 5 on an AP exam is a 5 whether you took the class downcounty or somewhere where the average HHI is $500K a year.
I do the bulk of my non-name brand shopping at Aldi and Lidl (Aldi's brioche bread makes great French toast and Lidl's fresh bakery makes great chocolate chip muffins) and head to Leisure World's Giant for the rest of my shopping (I dislike the Aspen Hill Shopping Center parking lot. If I need international items, H-Mart, Lotte Plaza, and Korean Korner are nearby.

There are sex offenders everywhere. I'd rather know than not know. It doesn't necessarily keep you safe by knowing.
The reality is that predators can be at it for decades before they are caught, if they are caught.

I live here (the one who posted they travel to Glenmont frequently). It’s a great neighborhood, but prices have really gone up, and it’s competitive. One house recently had something like 30 offers on it and went way above asking. I think Glenmont is a reasonable alternative.
We saw this house yesterday. It will probably go for $650. The wall paper at least looks way better in person than in the pictures.

PP, you were way off! It just posted today that it went for $565k. Still not too shabby, but not $100 over asking!!
I was very surprised and am super curious why it didn’t go for more. We saw a much crummier house with a similar layout go for $75k over ask at $600k.

Leisure world is a gated island walled off from the rest of the area. It really has no bearing on a discussion of actual SFH neighborhoods where a family may decide to live. I really can’t understand how so many of you look at an online map and then suddenly think you understand a very specific area.

Crime is not any higher in the sfh neighborhoods here than it is in Kensington or closer in Silver Spring. Check out the crime map, in some cases it is lower.

I really like my half an acre yard, and nice quiet neighborhood where kids play outside. All about a ten minute drive to the metro, and conveniently situated a close drive to Olney, Wheaton, Kensington and Rockville.
Exactly. I read this thread and I felt like I didn't even know my own neighborhood. I've been living in the area for 16 or so years and have never thought of it as dangerous. People talk about walking around late at night. And, the metro staff have to walk from the station to the rail yard at all hours and they don't have issues. My kids take the trains and buses all the time - like multiple times a week. Before Covid I used the trains and buses to get to work, all with no issues.
While schools might not have the best reputation, the only thing that really matters is whether they meet your child's needs. We have been very happy with our kids' options. And, it was a real bonus having Thomas Edison in the area because the bus ride wasn't so long for my son.

“ Considering only the violent crime rate, 20906 is safer than the Maryland state average and as safe as the national average.” That sounds promising at least.
