This wedding is a six hour drive. Apparently no church. Is a mixed religion marriage. So it is driving six hours. Checking into room and going down to reception, to bed then six hours back. My kid can sit alone in room sure but why make kid suffer. Wedding is in middle of nowhere. It is also not near a train. If it was Boston, NyC even Florida would go. But this is some random surburb in upstate NY.
I only mention church as most no kids weddings allow kids at church portion so at least get to see the wedding part.

?? Why can't the 14 yr old attend the wedding? They are grown up enough not to be a distraction. This is so weird.
Because the 14-year-old is expressly not invited to the wedding.

My wedding was probably middle of the road fancy, but was in DC and it was $185 a plate. 14 year old boys are not interested in attending weddings. It's a lot to ask the bride and groom to host extras.

If the invite came to "Mr and Mrs Smith" rather than "Mr and Mrs Smith and family" then it's pretty clear.
And I think OP said it was an older relative getting married - so it's likely not a 200 person affair and they had to cut numbers from somewhere. It makes sense to cut out that whole generation if it's a smaller event.

- NO, my ass is not coming to your big ass indoor wedding reception
- NO, my ass is not traveling to a hotel either.
At most, if you're nearby, I will come to your outdoor wedding ceremony. Then it's outdoor reception or bye bye.
Exactly. People are dying! Stay home!
Who is dying now? The anti vax community?

Even when I was single with tons of money and no obligations, I still would want a couple days to figure this out. who wants a reply to an out of town wedding invitation RIGHT NOW?
