For students who need FA, Columbia FA will make that dream possible. Schools like Duke are more for people who are willing to pay for the degree.


+1. After running NPCs on all ivies, Columbia provided about 20,000 in FA on household salary of $260K.

OP, your child can not go wrong with choosing Columbia.


This is just wrong. I was in graduate school at Columbia and had a roommate who'd gone to Columbia undergraduate. Through him I met a number of Columbia undergrads who were depressed and felt unsupported by the school. You can get swallowed by the city and the sense that others have their act together and no one really cares about you.

There are also great opportunities there for self-directed, intellectually curious, and motivated students. But it's definitely more sink or swim than a lot of other colleges and universities.


This is why it is a top Ivy League. Ther is a reason it is tops, becuase of the quality of teaching and quality of students. Part of the discipline is learning to work things out on your own. At the same time, plenty of excellent teachiners, advisors and an excellent writing center which provide students all the consulting time they need to assist in writing projects.

Columbia College is outstanding and has been educating most excellent students since 1754. Difficult to pass up that opportunity.

Duke is also exceptional.

Between the two, I would choose Columbia : top ranked Ivy League with proven excellence.

What is your basis for this? Columbia is not that much richer than Duke. Also has many more grad programs it has to spread money around


PP here. I presumed. I ran Duke's net price calculator. Its FA looks pretty good. Duke is a fine school.
