There’s a reason why Newsom wants every signature on the petition to recall him verified. I agree with him - we would not want a recall using signatures that can’t be tied to unique individuals who are eligible to sign it. It used to be I put my paper in a machine here in VA and I could see right on the screen what my choices were and had a chance to correct any discrepancies. I no longer can see those choices. That’s not a reassuring change.

There's a big difference between signing a petition on a street corner and signing a document sent to your home that already has a name on it, has a tracking number, and you can go to jail if you forge the signature. And the fact is, whenever they verify petitions, they routinely find fake names, duplicates etc., but they don't routinely find fake mail-in ballots. It's like one in a million, and it's usually a mistake.

That’s a good idea. Remember all the GOP efforts to get various people on the ballot (Kanye, for example) and how many of those signatures were faked by right wing operatives?

Not for nothing do we compare Republicans to Nazis. They hate democracy and people with disabilities; so this is their issue on which to shine.

That’s a false dichotomy, and you know it. My suspicion is that companies like Diebold worked with the GOP to flip votes in critical places, places that allowed them to keep state houses, for example. Part of the reason they were able to get away with it is because for many elections, especially midterms, there was little engagement and low turnout. Part of what made this the most secure election was that everybody and their uncle voted (relatively speaking; we still have a ways to go to really amazing turnout - and surprise surprise the GOP blocks anything that would get us there, too). We need to expand voting access.
