Ah, yes, the Little Mermaid. Where the moral of the story is: if you are pretty enough, and don't say anything, he'll love you.

Which may be slightly better than Beauty and The Beast, where the moral was: if I love him hard enough, he'll stop abusing me.

The moral of Beauty and the Beast is an actual line from the movie: “beauty is found within”. Pretty strong and relevant message. Also, to me personally there was a huge appeal of a princess that was a bookworm (I was a nerdy bookworm myself).

Can’t argue with the Little Mermaid. The message got kind of lost when they turned Andersen’s original ending into a happy ending.

I have a very sensitive kid who really struggled until recently. She's just turned 8. She still gets freaked out. Here are some you could try. She likes history, singing and girl-centered stories so you'll see a lot of that in here.

Annie - the 1999 version on Disney+ from TV. So much better than the 1980s version in many key ways. Nicer singing voices. Wonderful cast. No ridiculous climbing a railroad bridge sequence. Shorter.

Noelle - recent movie with Anna Kendrick. Christmas-themed. Similar to Elf but more gentle. Great feminist message.

Snowy Day - beautifully expanded from Ezra Jack Keats book. Very multicultural. So sweet.

Parent Trap - Lindsay Lohan version - got into this when she was 6

Cars

Kit Kittredge - this is actually quite a good film for the whole family. Stanley Tucci. Joan Cusack.

Tinker Bell

We also did a lot of shows as they were easier for her than movies.

Tumbleleaf is WONDERFUL.

Zoboomafu is a gentler version of Wild Kratts (made by those guys before they made the Wild Kratts show)

The Lion King is not appropriate for a lot of young kids especially if they have any sensitivity about death. The scene with the father being killed can be very upsetting.

+1. I saw the Lion King at age 16 and an still traumatized. It’s horrible. I’m not letting my kids watch it.
