You're assuming that we have the power to make or break our children and except in the most extreme cases I don't know that that is true. We are shepherds not creators.

I often ponder this question whenever a horrible crime is reported. For example, the Sandy Hook shooter. Had he lived, if I were the parent I would disown him.

Not every person is redeemable. Unconditional love does not extend to psychopathic murderers, nor pedos or some other heinous criminals.

I just finished the new Netflix show about him and was reminded that his dad, in particular, publicly stuck by him until his violent end. They did a tv interview together in prison. I understand unconditional love but boy, what J Dahmer did really pushes the boundaries of most peoples capacity to meet that.


The dad just kept making excuses for him. He seemed to think most things weren’t Jeffrey’s fault. I’m sure he carried guilt from the marriage and divorce but this is an example I think, of overcorrecting.

Kyle Rittenhouse is not a criminal. If my child had to kill to protect themselves against someone who attacked them unprovoked I would certainly stand by them.

If they committed an actual real serious crime it would be harder. I wouldn’t enable or defend them but I would visit them in prison and so they could feel they still had a family, it would be my cross to bear.


If my 17 year old grabbed an AR-15 and headed to a protest to “protect local businesses,” and subsequently killed two men in self defense, I certainly wouldn’t disown my kid, but I would think they are the biggest dumbass and I failed them as a parent.

I've always believed this but if one of my children raped and murdered another person, I just don't know.
