Adrian Tomine is one of my favorite "underground" cartoonists! So great he went viral.

What is so great about being married with kids? I’m married with kids and have a house, and I can see being happy as a single person with cats.

The millennial has the better deal.

What about the millennials who have kids and whose lives resemble the picture above?

Seriously, I’m a millennial and my life looks much more like the cover above. Sometimes I wish I could be like the solo lady with cats and a drink cover!

This expect mine is with colicky infant twins - I love them but what’s wrong with being a single cat lady? Her life is just as valid and fulfilling as any other.

Yes, this is really weird. Some sort of Rorschach test on what people think of women or millennials or something. Where are people seeing that this woman is "choosing to be single" or making some kind of statement on lifestyle single or married. I am married with kids now, but before that I was single and working. Pretty common life pattern. Had this pandemic caught me at that time, I would probably be doing what that woman is doing. It wouldn't be some commentary on whether I wanted a marriage or family or kids.

If she was comfortable with the way she is living then she would not have a screen set up behind her to hide the clutter. And she wouldn't get all prettied up from the waist up when obviously that is not her day to day 24 / 7 persona.

She has set up a lamp to shine on her face. She has put jewelry on and a nice blouse. The parts of her that the laptop camera does not see is very different from the image she is trying to project. She has the laptop set up on a bunch of books so that whoever she is chatting with on line can't see the disarray of her home.

The sink is full of dishes. The bed is unmade. Trash and clutter all over the floor. There is lots of wine in her kitchen but no actual food.

She has a couple of cats for company and it is obvious she video chats on line often. She is doing the best she can to have a social life.

I expect, by that standard, pretty much every woman on DCUM is a fake.

That’s a martini glass. And she needs to clean up her house

I think the point is that she does not need to clean up the house. O zoom - just curate the 8 square feet behind us and screw the rest.

I do think this cover is a depressing commentary. i think it makes you realize that this current lifestyle we have isn't exactly fulfilling or amazing in the long term. Compared to something that may sound boring or "lame" like raising kids and doing the work of a family. But when you see those old covers compared, to me, the family scenario looks much more satisfying. of course, YMMV, some dont want that kind of like. But I think it made a lot of people think
