The summer of 2020 was stressful due to COVID. Fortunately, the campers had the wonderful experience our campers have always had. Additionally, our protocols resulted in nobody getting sick or even testing positive.
We gave our families the option to cancel at the last minute because of COVID. Unfortunately, the uncertainties of COVID caused many families to cancel or not sign up just prior to the beginning of camp. This severely strained our finances. We had half our families cancel or not enroll.
The bankruptcy is true, but we are emerging from bankruptcy in a strong financial position. Our families from last summer are returning as are those who canceled last year.
As for payment of counselors, almost every counselor was paid in full. Some were unclear about bonuses, taxes and time not worked due to the delay in opening camp. Those few who are owed money will be paid in full. The bankruptcy rules have limited how quickly we can pay the balance. We had specific issues with some of the counselors who have probably posted the comments. We are happy to address those issues to anybody that would like to reach out.
We will not name names online or their specific behavior online.
This will be our 70th summer of providing wonderful experiences to campers from around the world. We have always met our obligations to our camp families and counselors and will continue to do so. We are looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you this summer.
Joe has been going around different websites mentioning the camp and pasting this same message. He did the same with my review of the camp on google. He’s trying to do damage control and make it seem like the things the staff and parents who were screwed over were saying isn’t true.

As a counselor who was in a leadership role last year and has spent over a decade at camp- I can tell you that the only issue with CRR is joe. He is abusive to his staff and on top of that still hasn’t paid MANY of them for their work last year. It has been devastating for so many girls who grew up with it and I am sorry for all of the campers who will be returning who won’t see their favorite counselors in his summer because of how the greitzers treated them.

A former camper and counselor was recently made co-director per recent email sent to past families. We have nervously decided to have our girls return. Really hope it’s as good as it has been in past. They have friends who they only see in summer. Unfortunately they’re young enough they hadn’t exchanged emails with each so we can’t get in touch to see if they’re coming back too.
Yes - my daughter who was a camper there for years and is now in college got an email yesterday from the new director asking her if she would like to apply to be a counselor this summer. Interesting. I'm not sure if they have a new owner or if Joe is staying on as owner. I do hope they can bounce back as my daughter absolutely LOVED her years there.

I was a counselor there in the early 2000’s, right after Joe and Robyn took over. Honestly, it was a fantastic experience. They were extremely caring towards the counselors and campers. We stayed in touch for years after my summers at CCR. But....somehow I’m not totally shocked to hear all this. I’m very sorry for the generations of families who have sent their kids there and wanted to continue. I myself was planning on sending my girls when they were old enough, this would ha e been the first year for my oldest but no way. From my time there, the returning staff is what made it all work. The women who had been campers there and came back as staff, the women who had risen through the ranks of counselor to admin, they are what made it safe and fun for everyone. Without that in place, I won’t even consider it as an option.

I just posted about Alleghany on the other sleepaway camp for girls thread - my girls have attended for two years and they were closed last summer sadly. I have been impressed at every turn. Wow, reading the last few pages of this thread, I hope the Camp gets new ownership. The original owners were great. I went to CRR for camp and as a Rookie Counselor. I am in awe at how the camp expanded its arts/sports activities. It was primarily a horse back riding camp at the time. It seems like a lovely program. Maybe bankruptcy was the best thing that could happen to the campers and the staff if the Director was so abusive. No camp experience should be like that. I hope the campers and staff get to go back under better circumstances and better management.

Do you understand how bankruptcy works??? They’ll be IN it for years - but who
he/the camp owes money to will have been settled by the court. They will be required to make payments to resolve those they owe money to as long as claims were made. Of course it is terrible if true that there’s still staff not paid but if they’ve entered into bankruptcy the debt is enumerated and the slate is effectively wiped clean (again assuming they make the ordered payments.)
We are sad and disappointed that Joe has made such a horrible mess of this but as tough as it is you almost have to
hope now that the camp does come back or no one gets paid ever.

I can tell that you are not owed money from this past summer as many others are. Those close to the situation know that camp should not be opened again.
We are NOT owed money and I am NOT supportive of what Joe has done it just that if the camp fails this season and going forward - no one has any chance of being paid. Bankruptcy doesn’t absolve moral failings - it offers a path back to financial responsibility. While my DD really wants to go - I don’t know if I trust that it will actually happen so my indecisiveness adds to reality that the innocent staff and past campers risk being unpaid. It’s a very sad situation but vilifying the court mandated solution isn’t gonna help anyone.

^^ I second this. He is terrible to his staff and the ones who were former campers get the worst treatment. He manipulates and uses their love of camp as leverage. 2019 was my last summer at camp and after hearing how he treated some of my friends (on top of not paying them!) I am glad I didn’t return.
