As a black woman who grew up in Ellicott City (graduated from Glenelg High School in 1987), even I would not call EC racist. I feel more uncomfortable in Olney. I like Olney and I didn't write the previous post, but come on. Glenelg is certainly more racist, but that's not EC.

This just came out today. Columbia ranked #1 safest city.

In case people are curious what PP is referring to, one example was a really ugly, unacceptable pushback to Howard County’s redistricting efforts.

Anyone thinking about relocating to Maryland should do real research to the issues throughout the state—Anne Arundel County, which I often see referenced here as a good place to move to (and it can be!) has the highest rates of hate and bias incidents across the state. I believe there was an article focused on Pasadena in WaPo recently that discussed.

I’m from Howard County, and there are many lovely things about the area, but a lot of work to be done.

We live in Ellicott City. Completely rough estimate: Around a third of the couples we know have one person commuting into DC (and the other Baltimore-area) and a few more where either one-half of the couple stays at home and the other goes into DC or both halves of the couple go into DC but only occassionally. This is totally just my experience and should be taken with a huge grain of salt, but I have found more folks in Ellicott City to have more ties to DC-based careers than the people I know in Columbia.

Pre-COVID, I used to commute into DC 2-4 days a week, my husband can WFH whenever he wants, though keeps an office in DC. For family reasons it made more sense for us to be up here and we love it.

I will say that the folks who live around here and go into DC are typically Maryland (and a few NoVa) natives, as opposed to transplants to the area.

Perhaps that does not impact residential areas nearby though.

The downtown, which is an very small part of overall Ellicott City, has had major flooding issues but the County has been putting in place a plan to drastically improve the infrastructure. Long, long overdue. The downtown, however, continues to have a strong dining and retail presence and is a very nice place to spend an afternoon or date night. But no, the flooding hasn’t really impacted the town as a whole—EC is consistently ranked as one of the best places to raise a family, etc.

But should be clear, while Main Street Ellicott City is a nice amenity close to Columbia, Ellicott City and Columbia are pretty distinct places.

My friend moved from Silver Spring to Olney after someone got shot in her front yard.

She did not move to be by white people. She wanted to keep her family safe. There is a difference.
