I’m a PP who calls my parents Mommy and Daddy; I never changed their names and it never occurred to me that you were supposed to! Why wouldn’t you just stick with whatever you “consciously” chose in first grade? Weird.

Yes i think many (most?) American kids start using Dad and Mom when they reach grade school and are conscious of sounding babyish.
