LOL, yeah, I have a child at UVA, they love it, another at an Ivy, they love it, my wife and I are both UCLA grads, we are perplexed by the anti-UVA vibe, it's a great shcool, I'm proud to wear Wahoo gear!

Perhaps that is because they are OOS and paying $75K to $80 a year and don't know in-state tuition at UVA is only $16K a year. Perhaps they don't know how difficult it is to get in from NOVA and how prized it is if your student wants to go on to grad school because you can invest the difference and have enough to pay for grad school later. Perhaps they don't know how difficult it is to get in. The 75th percentile of last year's entering class is a 1500 SAT; a 34 ACT and a 4.49 GPA.


I really don’t know what a school being cheap has to do with people in this area over-rating it. People outside of this bubble think of it as a solid state flagship like so many others, and that’s about it.

I was so astonished when I moved here to listen to people talk about it as if it were just short of an Ivy. That’s just not how anyone outside this bubble thinks of it, no matter what USNWR says.

Interesting, no UMD mentioned. I guess because the OP asked about popular schools. People go to UMD because they have to (primarily for financial reasons), not because they want to.

I think NYU is underrated, actually. It’s a far better university than it was 30 years ago, able to attract outstanding faculty. Everyone talks about Tisch and Stern, but the humanities there are also excellent. Less prestige than Columbia, of course, but recruiters go to both schools and post-college placements are impressive. The NYC experience isn’t for everyone, but downtown is way more fun than uptown, fwiw.

No one is saying it isn't a good school. It is simply more about reputation being higher in DCUM bubble than outside of it.[/quote]



For the reasons given above. If you know public universities in the United States, UVA comes in 2, 3, or 4 for U.S. News & World Report public school rankings. For 27 years UVA ranked 1, 2 or 3, always above Michigan, but that changed when USN&WR threw in the pell grant stuff (which UVA has no control over). Nevertheless, it is a top public university in the United States.


But here's the thing, the 30 year Net Present Value of going to UVA is slightly lower than Virginia Tech and also lower than Maryland. Over a lifetime of work, it is nearly $500K less than Duke and $675K less than Harvard. It is It is only $35K more than George Mason. It just isn't going to make that much difference. For earnings, the major will matter more.
