How do you think a kid will feel being an 19-20 year old senior? Kids know who was held back.
I know a lot of 19 year old high school seniors. Redshirting is pretty common, you know. None are 20—even if they were redshirted once they’re only 19.
If I held my fall kid back, they would have been 18 all of senior year. If a spring kid is held back they turn 19... the is way to old for high school. If a parent held back last year, they would have started at 6 this year. If they choose to hold back again, they will be 7 when they start.

OMG, I'm kind of glad to be in a mixed income, diverse school. Don't have to worry about having your spoiled kids in class with my K'er next year.

NP- virtual K is NOT appropriate since K is all about socializing, working together with other kids, hands on learning, multi-sensory learning. Im so upset that my K kid has virtual as his K experience. Im not redshirting bc he doesnt have any developmental need for it. But these K kids are totally getting screwed bc virtual learning is just not age appropriate for them.

What on earth are you talking about? Mom of August boy here who’s not redshirting. What do you think kids learn in kindergarten? It’s not like they’re missing a year of medical residency here!

The vast majority of these kids have been to preschools, they're coming into kindergarten already knowing all of their letters, numbers, etc. Many are fully reading. Kindergarten is more for social experience. There's no testing or anything at the kindergarten level. Zero reason to redshirt unless there are some serious learning disabilities going on, and even then, just get an IEP.
Nope - virtual kindergarten is not appropriate. Find one qualified educator who thinks it is.
It is appropriate. It requires parent or adult support. Parents cannot be bother. That is the issue.

I wasn't talking about virtual kindergarten. Just find a private tutor or homeschool or go private. But redshirting is dumb as hell.
Don’t care. Still did it. My August birthday boy isn’t even the oldest in his class. I signed him up for an extra year of in person, half day preschool. His class has 2 July birthday boys in it (as well as a later August and a September). So it seems redshirting is definitely happening.

Yes. I think it will be more competitive for private school spots, elite sports teams, college, etc... That all sounds so far away when you have a kindergartner but it is something that should be taken into consideration.
Depending on the sport they will be put by age, not grade. They will be made fun of for being held back.
