So this is going to be a $hit show. Kids scrambling clubs to get to the pinnacle of DMV soccer.

When is DCU moving to Loudoun, seems to be something they need to disclose to attract the right players.

“ MLS teams felt that the level of competition provided by non-MLS clubs wasn't high enough, resulting in too many easy games. Todd Durbin, MLS executive vice president for competition and player relations, was diplomatic in his assessment of the level, though he admitted that MLS had been in discussions with the USSF for the past 12 to 18 months about its concerns relating to the DA.

"What was really lacking for us was there was a need for a more robust role of international games, to allow us to really benchmark ourselves and compete against top clubs, both regionally and internationally," Durbin said. "We're in a worldwide market and our players are competing against players from around the world. So that was one area that we had been having conversations in the background about trying to grow."

The non-MLS youth clubs had their own set of complaints, including that the USSF was organizing the competition in a manner that favored MLS academies. One example is when the USSF opted to implement a tiered system at the under-18/19 level that resulted in Crossfire Premier, based in Redmond, Washington, being demoted to a lower tier, despite the club having successfully competed against MLS academy teams.”

Major League Soccer announced the launch of a new elite youth competition platform intended to provide year-round high-level matches for MLS club academy teams and non-MLS academy teams that previously participated in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy which ceased operations.

The new platform will provide elite competition against domestic and international teams, and MLS is evaluating expanding participation to include clubs beyond the former Development Academy.

“Major League Soccer is deeply committed to developing world-class players through an elite competitive pathway, from our academy teams through the professional game,” said Todd Durbin, MLS EVP of Competition & Player Relations in a statement. “As we look ahead to the 2026 FIFA MLS World Cup here in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, now more than ever it is incumbent on us to establish a competition that sets a new standard for elite youth play and allows athletes to achieve their full potential.”

“We are seeing significant contribution to the quality of play in MLS from homegrown talent,” said Jeff Agoos, MLS Senior Vice President of Competition, Operations, and Medical Administration, two-time World Cup veteran with the U.S and five-time MLS Cup winner. “As we currently have 2,500 elite players and 250 top youth coaches in our academies, MLS is uniquely positioned to provide a new and enhanced platform that will include high quality coaching, professionalized environments and enhanced player identification.”

The new platform will include league season matches and both regional and national tournaments with international teams. It will also expand coaching education and improve the approach to player identification to ensure top players have the opportunity to participate in a high-level development environment.

“Participating in high quality, competitive matches on a consistent basis is essential to the development of our young players,” said Fred Lipka, Vice President and Technical Director of MLS Player Development. “Launching this new competition will allow us to consistently challenge players, staffs and teams, optimizing the potential of every player on the field.”

In addition, MLS is evaluating the potential to provide future competition opportunities for girls.

This is PP. If the MLS league news is true, which it apparently is as of now, DA will be replaced by..... DA plus? Which non-MLS teams will be in it? In this area, Baltimore and Bethesda, maybe Arlington? With PDA, PA Classics, and a few others? But why have Richmond and VDA then joined ECNL? The confusion (and mystery) deepens.

I understand from a good source that Bethesda's (former) DA will be joining the new MLS league, with an announcement to that effect coming soon. The individual I spoke with was unsure about which other teams from the greater DC area would be joining.

Do promise to update the board please when that decision is final. Awfully close to DCU.

Absolutely. If there's one good thing the DA did, it was removing the temptation of playing high school garbage-ball.

Let it go, man...

Sounds like the tier 1 they created last year. Bethesda and BA in, Arlington out...

So the DA is going to basically continue on led by the MLS teams, and there are going to be no VA teams ?

I would guess Arlington will be in. They have competitive teams in most of the age groups this year, and well respected coaching.

There will be MLS only youth league. Arlington will have to apply to a new league whether it is NCSL, EDP or ECNL. They will be fine.

Especially as DCU was not to keen on them of having the DA extension in the first place.

If MLS is the Roadrunner, Arlington and other non-MLS wannabes are . . . Wile E. Coyote United. Good luck with all that and don’t change a thing.

You sound like you are hoping that other clubs, children and parents suffer a misfortune. That doesn't seem kind.

I don’t think it’s a misfortune at all. It’s a choice. It may be right for you. It is not the one I’d make. But I certainly don’t think it matters for the kids one way or another. Which is kind of the point.

VDA - Mike Cullina is on board of US Soccer + didn't they already have a girls ECNL team. Plus they struggled to compete in the DA as well.

Don't know about Richmond.
