What will I do? Nothing much- same as always. Vote, donate $ here and there, focus on my family and community, avoid talking politics with those who are not like-minded IRL, sometimes come on internet boards if I feel like talking about it, avoid media when I don’t. What else is there to do really?

Look: Trump is just a symptom, he isn’t the cause of the way America is today. I grew up in a small town in the Midwest, and have lots of family and old friends who still live there. These people are angry, angry, angry. And they should be. Their communities are in decline, they can’t afford healthcare, can’t afford to send their kids to college or help them get “launched”, they are often working low paying jobs, and a great number of their kids have succumbed to drugs. For whatever reason, they are directing their anger at what they see as “urban elites” - which means “me”- whether I agree or not.. Somehow it seems to give them hope to hear things like “we can say Merry Christmas again” “we’re the real Americans” “haha liberal tears” etc. All while they hand me a giant tax cut and my 401k balance climbs- and effectively give my kids more and more and more- all while they can’t even afford to take their kids to the doctor. I don’t get it, but it isn’t going to be ending anytime soon whether Trump is elected or not. There isn’t anything to do about this (other than voting, and efforts to donate or GOTV)- but that is all temporary/short term at best. I have no idea how all of this will play out- but this division will not be improving anytime soon, one way or another.

It is depressing when you think about it, but there is really no sense worrying about things I can’t control. I just focus on my family and community- things I actually have some level of control over- and try hard to muster up quiet patience and understanding for the rest. It will be interesting to see how this all turns out in 20,30,40 years.

I certainly do not intentionally mislead my close friends on anything when it comes up. I’m courageous enough to own my shit, even if it means people don’t like it. If I DID support Trump, I’d say, I support him, we don’t agree and I choose not to discuss it. But I wouldn’t give even a hint of a suggestion that it were not the case to close family and friends. Because I’m not a coward or ashamed of my choices. You can avoid drama and still stand by your position. I mean, Kelly Ann and George make it work. You could figure it out. I should have said 100% of outspoken Trump supporters in our family. Right now we still do 1-2 limited events per year with them. Very easy just to cut the cord completely.

As for my acquaintances and neighbors who are Trump supporters, we do know. Don’t worry. We don’t associate much now anyway so there’s not much to change.

You know the most cost effective and proven way to reduce poverty and crime? Provide quality early childhood care and education that reaches into the home.
