Does it really matter though if they don't have insurance?
Why would they not have insurance if they get a license? If they are going to bother to get the license they are most likely going to be following rules which means being insured.
What world are you living in??

Many people will say, "I'm socially leftwing but economically rightwing," but these folks are a major, major drain on our economy. My kids' school has a few hispanics in each class. Their parents never show up to events, I've personally observed hired translators standing in the hallway waiting for no-show parents for HOURS for a parent-teacher conference, they need separate ESOL classes, they're on subsidized lunch and probably head start too, and then the kids misbehave and disrupt classes. It's a social and economic cancer
They are not drain on society. They are the legs on which this economy. Those kids will outperform yours one day. Watch it. While you are worried about ESOL classes, these kids grow up learning 2 languages. I learned Spanish after arriving in US because it's clearly the 2nd language here. Not a big deal. Why can't you? It's not a hard language. And if you can, why not help them translate.
I don't show up for the school events. School is for kids and not for parents. You should go to school for you and not hang around your kids' school.
My children speak two languages fluently and they didn't need tax dollars to achieve that. I speak three languages. Hispanic illegal immigrants will NEVER pay enough into the system to justify the exorbitant amount of tax dollars wasted on their underperformance.
DP.. get off your high horse. I can speak two languages, too, but it's incredibly selfish and naive to think that just because one person was able to achieve x with no help that others can do the same with no help.
More than likely that fruit or vegetable you ate (if you eat any, that is) was picked by an illegal immigrant. I'm not *for* illegal immigration, but I see those folks as people and not just a drain on society and realize that they do some back breaking work.
That's a lot of hate for people who pick your produce for you and your family.
I don't support exploiting people which is what we do when it comes to picking produce. Illegal immigration exploits people and puts them in a condition where they can't complain about it either.
Americans love for cheap labour needs to end. Same for exploitative H1B practices.
I am very much against illegal immigration and think that most of these farm jobs should be automated. But I take issue with the idea that illegal immigrants are "exploited" (except women who pay to be transported here and then are forced into the sex trade). People that cross the border illegally and work in these agricultural jobs have MADE A CHOICE that it will make them better off than their home country. If at any point they weren't better off, they could leave, but they don't because they are still better off than they were before. That is self-interested decision-making, not exploitation.
But yeah, the "Americans don't want to do these jobs" arguments get old. Americans don't want to do these jobs because 1) illegal immigration pushes the wages down; and 2) we pay people in the US not to work, so there is little incentive for them to do any job that is "hard."

Don’t really understand how the licenses can work while the state is expecting everyone to update their current driver’s license to Real ID. I guess the VA Senate will be voting on it tomorrow.
You can register to vote via on any DMV drivers license application. Just check the citizen box on the basic and you can vote? The real id compliance date is 10/1/2020. All real id should distinguish between citizen and non citizen. With real id or proof of citizenship for voting registration with reasonable exceptions. 40+ years ago it wasn't a huge problem . Look at PA- realid for legally present non citizen and any other license expires to match date legal presence expires.
DC 's also expire https://dmv.dc.gov/page/real-id-proof-lawful-presence
Wash Post also had the South Korean illegally present wanting a license and I guess that's a visa overstay. S/he has documents from South Korea but is illegally present in the USA. Overwhelming focus in VA is on illegal immigrants - wait. Last time I checked this state was cap of Confederacy- it's ike MD and illegal immigrants. More of a priority than AA and Baltimore. Twisted.
Last year when this didn't pass Dems were quoted as 25% of illegals were from Asia https://bluevirginia.us/2019/01/driving-privileges-for-undocumented-individuals-in-virginia-fails-despite-massive-turnout-from-community-members-and-advocates
You can own a vehicle but not have a drivers license and vice versa. If you register a car and don't have ins you're supposed to pay 500. Car registration renewals do not require policy numbers and proof of insurance.

I have been doing my part in every election, everyone needs to exercise their right and responsibility to vote.

Other interesting tidbits from the WP article:
"Many undocumented immigrants have resorted to getting their driver’s licenses in Maryland, which is possible when one’s car is registered in that state. "
That explains why there are some many Maryland plates seen in Northern Virginia.
An interesting financial motive appears, make money off these illegals:
"Last month, the Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis, a nonpartisan organization, estimated that a driver’s license law would bring the state as much as $17.7 million in extra title fees, car registrations and other taxes over the next two years."
Of course, glossed over in the article is the move give illegals in-state tuition. What's the cost of that? Unreported, of course.
The usual sob stories also appear in the article, with no background or context - just America is to blame for them not driving and how terrible it is for them.
Screw them. Deport all illegals. I hope ICE drops the ban-hammer on Virginia next.

So glad I moved out of VA and to a state that doesn't do this nonsense.

Anonymous wrote:"I see illegal immigrants as people."
Well, I see other criminals as people too, but that doesn't give them the right to commit crimes without consequence. It is simple. If you want to be in this country, then do so legally and obey the laws. That's why we have them. If you're willing to do that then great, the more the merrier. Why is this so hard for some people to understand?
Second topic. Enforcement. Border camps, walls, etc. are mostly a waste of time and effort and can be inhumane. Reduce CBP and claw back that money. Pass a federal law upon the states and localities not allowing public services to ILLEGAL immigrants. Violating that law will result in loss of all federal funding from Feds to States. Pass a federal law (fraud and illegal hiring practices) on all business in U.S. to not knowingly and systematically hire illegal workers. Deploy business auditors from IRS or Dept. of Commerce (using money from reduced CBP) to randomly audit businesses of all sizes looking for I9 verifications of all staff (employed or contractors). Businesses in violation will lose license and be assessed a significant fine (one that will likely put the company out of business). None of this is violent or physically harms any children or adults. It simply works at the economics and services side of the motivation to come here illegally in the first place.
Finally, streamline the legal immigration process, particularly for those that can prove citizenship from central american countries and those that can demonstrate a high demand / low supply trade, skill, or expertise.

Not to mention, more of them taking jobs that belong to citizens and LEGAL immigrants.
Great idea, morons!
