I researched cars for my DD. We live in Los Angeles and to get to school, she has to traverse terrain that you would not expect in LA (going over a mountain and on some really windy roads with little-to-no shoulder (Sunset Blvd. and Mulholland Dr.)
She wanted a Jeep (Wrangler or Renegade). OP, please look at Consumer Reports on Jeep Safety. That car is shockingly dangerous.
The Toyota Highlander is always a good bet, but the "little sister" of the Highlander is the RAV4.
I had an older model Toyota Highlander (2007), but the newer models have gotten overly-big. We got her a 2017 RAV4--the RAVs have also gotten bigger, so now are the size of the original Highlanders.
It's a GREAT CAR, OP! We are so happy with it! I like it better than my Highlander, which I loved. Consumer Reports rates it very highly on performance and safety.
The new 2020 Wranglers get good safety ratings. Its shocking how little you know about it.
It's not shocking because I don't research new cars. It's a shockingly bad financial decision to buy a new car.

Anonymous wrote:BTW not all Jeeps guzzle gas. I owned an 1988 Wrangler back in day. Was 4 cylinder with a stick shift. It also had no AC and “shift on the fly” meaning I could keep it in two wheel drive and shift to 4 wheel drive even while driving
Wrangles still come in 4 cylinders with a stick and no AC

The new Chevy Blazer.

While I would never buy one, because it doesn't suit my tastes, a Jeep is definitely among the selected group of vehicles that stirrs the soul and offers to its owner an experience that is more than mere transportation.
Maybe it is no longer popular to show desire towards a car, or it is not progressive enough to have general disdain for personal vehicles as a matter of environmentally friendly principles. But we are in a transitional period where one can still experience the rewards of owning a car that has a personality. We can still yet celebrate this culture before future generations grow increasingly detatched from it.
In this era of detatchment from nature and lack of first-hand experiences with genuine people, places, and things, owning a car such as a Jeep can help restore authenticity to the experience of growing up and traveling within this great nation of ours. A little adventure and excitement is good for any person on their way to a mature adult.
Daisy Duke drove a Jeep.
Sarah Connor drove a Jeep.
Barbie drove a Jeep.

Seriously. Almost no 4WD/AWD in the country ever are driven off road. They are purely vanity cars.
Why does anyone in this region need an AWD or a high clearance car? Maybe once every 3 or 4 years do we get enough snow where it is needed.
But hey lets look like a bunch of tools who can't resist slick marketing campaigns driving around in our gas guzzling steel boxes compensating for something while we kill our planet.
If that was my daughter I'd talk to her about the planet and having some common sense about what she needs rather than being insecure and thinking her self worth is tied up in what she drives.
I'm not compensating for anything. I'm enjoying myself. I like driving up rocky/muddy trails in Virginia or Pennsylvania, and going camping way up high in the mountains at GWNF, in places that are too far up into the mountains to hike to with a campsite worth of gear. We bring our huge 18" reflector telescope and look at stars and galaxies and nebulae, stuff you can't see without being way up in the mountains above the valley fog and far from city lights.
Just because you personally don't like it, doesn't mean others don't - or shouldn't - enjoy it.
Frankly, you sound like an unpleasant, joyless loser. Constantly casting aspersions on others and judging them. You not liking something is hardly a reliable barometer for normal people.
We do similar trips but we rent a 4WD since we don’t need it for our daily driver. Gas savings alone on our commute pays for rental.
Pretty sure OP DD isn’t camping in a national forest FYI. But enjoy them before they burn up I guess.
Instead of complaint about gas, why don't you not drive so much? If they are so terrible, why rent one? I fill my tank every 3 weeks... how much are you filling yours?
For someone who enjoys tranquil nature, you sure are angry!
