And it seems that this kid can do either Algebra Honors or regular Algebra in 8th. But my question to people is: how does Algebra Honors in 8th compare to the Algebra class that the 7th grader takes? I asked a counselor and he said they were the same but I kind of doubt it.

Our elementary school had 3 math tracks...AAP, prepping for honors and regular. The middle one taught a combo of 6th and 7th grade math. Most went onto Math 7 honors.

This leads me to believe that Math7Hon is actually 7th grade math (i.e. a review of what 6th grade AAP students learned) plus, maybe, an 8th grade curriculum. And that, maybe, 8th grade math is just a more in depth version of 7th grade math rather than new material.

7th grade math and 8th grade math are BOTH pre-algebra. 7th grade math (non-honors) is going to move a little slower and have fewer "extensions" (i.e. challenges). Depending on your MS (and the caliber of students in it), you may find that 7th grade math is filled with kids who don't want to learn math and are disruptive.

A lot of parents/kids decide that 7th grade is the time to "jump up" to honors even if they have been in regular 6th grade math so far.

A friend of mine (whose child I knew pretty well) signed her kid up for 7th grade math b/c the girl wasn't in adv. math in 6th grade. It was a mess.... the reg. teacher left by tgiving telling the kids that she couldn't take them anymore. The sub told the kids a few weeks later that they were so bad she was going to quit. I told the mom that everyone knows you can't be in gen ed in this particular school b/c it means you are with the kids who want to be disrespectful and disruptive. She talked to the counselor and the girl was moved to 7 math Hon. starting at the beginning of the third quarter (i.e. end of Jan.). The girl had to stay after for help a few times but she ended up with an A for the year -- and she had NOT been selected for adv. math at the elem. school.

It is pretty common for kids who are decent at normal 6th grade math to jump up to 7 math honors in 7th grade. Remember -- 75-ish% of white and asian kids are taking Alg. by 8th grade. That only happens if you take pre-algebra in 7th grade (or earlier). In some schools, your kid is in with the lower tier if they stay "on grade level" (aka in the low track).

They're allowed to do so. It doesn't necessarily mean it's a great idea.

Regarding kids who are in fcps gen ed in 6th grade, what are their options? Will they all go on to Math 7, or will some go on to Math 7 honors?

Absolutely not true at my school. I had an AAP student in my math 8 class last year, after he took math 7 the year before. Brilliantly gifted in anything to do with reading/writing, but really struggled with math.
