1. He's been unhappy with his life (i.e., himself) for a long time.
2. He was down to get the new house because, when you have problems, sometimes you think, well, if we make this one change, maybe everything will get better. He might have also thought this house was a better place for the family to be if things didn't get better.
3. They go on the Italy trip, which was already booked, as sort of a last-ditch effort to save things -- maybe if we get away from our daily lives, things will get better.
4. She deliberately gets pregnant on the trip. Maybe she felt like it was all slipping away, and another baby would hold it together until he came around? (I don't really buy that he was pushing for another baby, but if he was, it was just another attempt on his part to find a band-aid for his larger unhappiness.) Plus, she realized all the content she could get off a new baby, with the house renovation winding down.
5. He doesn't want to be the guy who walks out on his family, so he tried to pull it together over the summer. But he couldn't.
6. She's pissed, but decides being the cool-as-hell chick that's ok with her husband walking out on her is more on brand. Plus, she's again seeing all the potential content that might come from this.
Who knows? It's all so weird.
I’m so intrigued by this whole situation as well. And that’s exactly what I was thinking was going on behind the scenes too.
