Pittsburgh is a great school if it fits your child. It has wonderful opportunities in terms of internships and kids gong pre med. The school has an unban feel. School is a nice size for many students but has same issues in terms of getting classes or grad students teaching.
Pittsburgh is a nice sized city with lots of things to do. With Carganie Mellon right there as well young people all over the city. Makes for a fun vibe.

1. Pitt is a perfectly solid school, particularly in the sciences. The graduates are generally balanced, community focused, reasonably driven people.
2. Obviously, you need to be cognizant of whether urban is what you want. Because it is. And that's fine.
3. Pittsburgh really is a pretty neat city, but it is also pretty quirky. (Consider reading The Paris of Appalachia, a series of short essays that really do capture what makes the place tick...and not tick.) Also be aware that Pittsburgh is sort of a souped up version of Pennsylvania parochialism on steroids. You will encounter a mindset that it is undebatably God's Country, which walks and periodically crosses the line between endearing and annoying. The result of that it is a place where you will probably have a strong and loyal alumni group in the region who believe that it is better than it actually is, but if you're looking to get out of the region, it will not be quite the same though it will be better than people think it is.

Now, take my advise with a grain of salt because I graduated over a decade ago. But, I was your daughter. I actually went with Pitt because there were SO MANY options that I knew whenever I found my direction, they'd have it. And they did, actually a somewhat obscure undergraduate social work program. Worked out beautifully for me.

So moving on. My question. I have a kid who is interested in Pitt. Dietrich. Geoscience to a PhD, not pre-health.
He’s looking at smaller schools, and that’s what I know. I really liked it. So did he. But here are my concerns:
People have said it can be hard to get classes. How hard? Not graduate in 4 years hard? Or not getting ideal time/professor but can get the class at 8 am? Can get an elective you like, but it’s hard to get the really popular ones?
How big are the science classes? Intros? Upper level? Labs? What is taught by TAs and what is taught by full professors? How good is the teaching. Bad science/math teaching can be really bad.
And how good is the access to real science research for undergrads? Are the locked out by grad students?
Maybe these seem like stupid questions. After Pitt, WM is DC’s next biggest school. But he likes it a lot and rolling/safety. And it could be an option.
