That's a link to CUPF, not to MCPS. CUPF collects those fees and gives a small percentage of that money, if there is any, to MCPS.

Now go find the line item in the budget that shows how much of those imaginary rental fees were ever actually collected. It's $40,000, not $4 million.

That’s on MOCO County Council. Just like when you pay Federal Taxes. The Treasury (IRS) collects the money and Congress distributes to the various agencies.

And where did you get the $40K number from? Let’s pretend your number is correct, then isn’t the $2.4M that MSI gave to MoCo huge awesome amount?

No, it is not a huge awesome amount. It is a huge liability. The money only paid to install the artificial turf fields. It does not pay for maintenance, removal or replacement.

Again, see the WJ, RM, Wootton high school artificial turf fields. Installed and then abandoned. Those fields must be maintained, removed and replaced out of the MCPS Operating Budget because the whole fantasy artificial turf plan failed. Rentals did not materialize, rental income did not fund maintenance, removal or replacement.

Creating a liability for the MCPS Operating Budget is not awesome. It is a continual drain of education funds to an artificial turf field when that money could be used to pay for teachers or give teachers raises. MSI Soccer is making a choice for how the MCPS Operating Budget will be used. They want money to maintain, clean, remove and replace their field surface, classrooms be damned.

I work in the athletic field biz. Prior poster is correct. Synthetic turf fields are marketed by the installers as no maintenance. This is not true. In general
synthetic turf fields come with higher costs than natural grass fields. Synthetic turf fields have to be irrigated on hot days to cool the fields down enough to allow for play.
Synthetic turf fields have to be regularly groomed to fluff up the infill to prevent hard zones that injure your children. Synthetic turf fields have
to be cleaned regularly to get rid of debris. We sell a magnetic boom that is towed around the field to pick up metal on the field: hair pins, nails,
etc. The older fields that have infill made from ground up radial tires have a lot of metal in the infill. The synthetic turf fields have to be disinfected
on a regular schedule to prevent MRSA. Synthetic turf fields have to be regularly inspected and sewn to fix repairs. My company regularly charges
$40,000 to remove paint that vandals have applied to synthetic turf fields. Life span of synthetic turf fields is 10 years. Many look rough at the
7 year point. It is not that easy to find another $1 million dollars to replace a synthetic turf field.

Finally natural grass fields are way more eco friendly. Paying a grounds guy to mow and fertilize is small change compared to the upkeep of
synthetic turf fields.

Has anyone ever seen a synthetic field irrigated on a hot day? It is not a bad idea just never seen it actually done.

Proper care of grass athletic fields require:

-fertilizers
-herbicides (rid of weeds)

-aeration
-seeding
-watering (we had our first rain today after about 3 weeks of no rain)
-mowing
-painting of lines
-dethatching
-removal of foreign objects (nails, screws, and other sharp objects)

As for irrigating the turf fields, our area never gets too hot to do that. But eferees and coaches are required stop games for water breaks on hot/humid days of about 87 or above degrees.

Where do you live?
Artificial turf was 150 degrees in Montgomery County yesterday. It was burning the feet of the players. Artificial turf fields are actually required to be closed when they get too hot for children to use them safely.

Last I checked, fertilizers and especially herbicide causes serious illness and cancer.

You might have not played soccer before but people wear soccer cleats to play soccer. Cleats were invented in 1525.

Do you ever walked on a black asphalt parking lot in 90+ degree weather? They get a whole lot hotter than turf fields. Do you ever hear anyone burning their feet from the hot asphalt ground? No. Cause civilized people wear shoes. No one is allowed to play soccer with bare feet.

Oh, wrong answer! Artificial turf actually gets hotter than asphalt! And it melts shoes! Aren't you glad you are learning today?

https://ftw.usatoday.com/2015/08/its-so-hot-in-texas-turf-is-melting-cleats

But turf fields can get hot — dangerously hot. On a clear, sunny day, the surface temperature of turf can soar 60 degrees Fahrenheit above that of grass.
Researchers at Pennsylvania State University's Center for Sports Surface Research have logged turf surface temperatures as high as 175 degrees at Penn State. Others in Utah have recorded even higher temperatures.
"At these temperatures, water bottles will melt; shoes will melt," said Andrew McNitt, director of the Penn State center.

Heatstroke is one of the leading causes of sudden death in secondary school athletes. Last year's Annual Survey of Football Injury Research found 64 football players have died from heatstroke since 1995. Out of that number, 47 were high school athletes.

According to a study cited by the Las Vegas Sun in 2009, artificial turf above 122 degrees is considered “unsafe for sustained athletic use.” You won’t be surprised to hear that depending on the air temperature, turf can get as hot as 180 degrees. That number is not a misprint – 180 degrees in the most extreme conditions. If you’ve played on AG surfaces and encountered the searing pain caused by excessive heat, you will know it is something that can dramatically impact performance.

Me no see nothing that says turf is hotter than asphalt. Articles show Texas and Las Vegas......we are not that hot here. Plus the 2009 article how the old tire infill. Come on now? Me see you lie too much. Please prove to me that a green colored turf with white zeolite infill is hotter than a black asphalt.

The truth you cannot say. The reality you cannot see.

That makes you mad that you were wrong, doesn't it? You were given links that explained exactly why artificial turf is hotter than asphalt (hint: it's science) and now you are mad to have been proven wrong.

From one study that you can't read:

The surface temperature of the synthetic turf was 37º F higher than asphalt and 86.5º F hotter than natural turf.

In another study that you can't read it specifically said that they removed the infill to see if that caused the artificial turf to be hotter. It didn't. The heat is from the plastic blades.

They even put it in big letters so people like you could understand.

Fibers are a major contributor to high surface temperatures Explanation: It's the green grass fibers that make the artificial turf fields hotter than asphalt, not the infill. The researchers made a power point with simple sentences for you. https://plantscience.psu.edu/research/centers/ssrc/documents/temperature.pdf

Wow. This showed how dumb and crazy the folks at Rose Hill are. They not only tried to stop the construction of Julius West but also tried to stop Einstein turf field as well. I’m truly surprised by the Rose Hill people’s lack of understanding of how local governments work, lack of common sense and preparation of the legal challenge of MCPS. They had a lawyer too.

MSI Soccer is certainly showing what hateful people they are. You would think when they have been piling up millions of dollars from their players and probably have millions more hidden away that they would be a little more adult in their online trolling. Is soccer really such a hateful game that this is the mentality of the adults that run these leagues?

I’m not part of MSI nor have any kids playing soccer for MSI, BSC or any clubs. I am a 40 year residence of Rockville and have attended grade school to HS in Rockville. My hate is not Rockville or MCPS. I actually love it here otherwise I would have moved already. My hate is towards the selfish folks at Rose Hill.

Rockville is no longer an isolated suburban city. Rockville residences have to recognize and accept that we are ever growing city. The city and its citizens are getting more prosperous every year. The city has to develop to grow. A turf field is part of that development.

There are no proven scientific/medical proof or evidence that turf fields cause cancer. Claiming cause cancer is similar to the crazy Hollywood folks that claim vaccinations causes mental disabilities.

Artificial turf has nothing to do with the development of a city.

Silica sand is a known carcinogen. You really need to up your knowledge. Where do you live that you don't have access to the Internet? Try a public library and do some research.

Crystalline silica has been classified as a human lung carcinogen. Additionally, breathing crystalline silica dust can cause silicosis, which in severe cases can be disabling, or even fatal. The children using these fields will be inhaling silica sand.

https://www.osha.gov/Publications/osha3176.html

OK I took your advice and did some research. It is clear that you did not do yours. Here's what I know based on what I found.

You are right -- crystalline silica is a carcinogen. And that's where the accuracy of your research ends.

Please read below and then stop spreading lies.

THE TURF AT JWMS AND OTHER NEW FIELDS FOR MCPS DO NOT CONTAIN CRYSTALLINE SILICA. The MCPS website specifies that the infill being used in the new turf fields is clinoptilolite zeolite. See information about the new turf fields on the MCPS website here: https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/athletics/programs/default.aspx?id=542923

To further debunk your claim that the infill contains silica, I found the manufacturer of zeolite infill's website, which clearly states that the infill does NOT contain silica. To quote:

In 2013 ZeoFill was introduced to the sports field industry to avoid health concerns and label warnings pertaining to Proposition 65. ZeoFill does not contain crystalline free silica (known to cause cancer or birth defects), therefore it is the preferred substrate. It also helps to naturally cool the surface of the field.

Here is the website for ZeoFill https://www.kmizeolite.com/synthetic-turf/

So just to summarize: THE NEW TURF FIELDS DO NOT CONTAIN THE MATERIAL SILICA. STOP SPREADING LIES.

And CRYSTALLINE SILICA is quartz dust. No one ever said the infill was quartz. So you don't understand the discussion.

What the infill IS is 98% silica sand and 2% zeolite of from different sources.

The person above specified crystalline silica..so I do understand. I am responding to her implication that the turf is made using this material.

Bottom line, however, regardless of the content of the infill, the turf fields are done and being utilized. Not much you can do about that.

Because?
Odd how it's now illegal for teens to buy vape and cigarettes. Laws do change when children are in danger. It is happening today.

Parents who are going to the Board of Education complaining about the injuries their children are receiving on artificial turf live all over the county, not just
in one neighborhood. Hazards are eliminated through legislation. Montgomery County has even banned lawn chemicals. It is stunning how uninformed and uneducated the commenters on this forum are about Montgomery County.

Commenters on this forum should really get out of their basements and get to know the County. Parents and athletes have been complaining about injuries and dangers of artificial turf for a long time. The world is a lot bigger than your basement!

The age changed from 18 to 21. Wow, what a major change for something that is known and proven to cause lung cancer long ago. There’s no proven link that turf causes cancer even for the old tire grind infills. So I guess you will have to wait a few hundred years.

“The earth is flat!” LOL

-dethatching
-removal of foreign objects (nails, screws, and other sharp objects)

As for irrigating the turf fields, our area never gets too hot to do that. But eferees and coaches are required stop games for water breaks on hot/humid days of about 87 or above degrees.

Where do you live?
Artificial turf was 150 degrees in Montgomery County yesterday. It was burning the feet of the players. Artificial turf fields are actually required to be closed when they get too hot for children to use them safely.

Last I checked, fertilizers and especially herbicide causes serious illness and cancer.

https://www.npr.org/2019/05/13/723056453/california-jury-awards-2-billion-to-couple-in-roundup-weed-killer-cancer-trial

Out of that number, 47 were high school athletes.

https://www.eenews.net/stories/1060748383

According to a study cited by the Las Vegas Sun in 2009, artificial turf above 122 degrees is considered “unsafe for sustained athletic use.” You won’t be surprised to hear that depending on the air temperature, turf can get as hot as 180 degrees. That number is not a misprint – 180 degrees in the most extreme conditions. If you’ve played on AG surfaces and encountered the searing pain caused by excessive heat, you will know it is something that can dramatically impact performance.

It’s a little pathetic that Rose Hill folks have to lie to convince people. People that live outside out Rose Hill are not that gullible. False info about MCPS budgets, safety of turf fields, lights causing accidents on I-270, heavy traffic on Falls Road, and lack of parking.

I’m waiting for a Rose Hill to start claiming that the earth is flat.
