Somehow the bottom line is always: how does this affect parking.
Parking sucks at most schools as is, so this is a moot point.
It is particularly bad at JW as it is basically at a 270 intersection. There is almost no street parking near by.
A lot of people live within walking/biking distance of JW. And there's also the T2, the 47, and the 56. If more people who can walk/bike/take the bus actually walked/biked/took the bus, then there would be more parking spaces available for people for whom walking/biking//taking the bus isn't an option.
A few neighborhoods are in walking distance..but not many. Do those Ride Ones really have the capacity to transport 100 of parents all leaving at the same hour in the late evening? I live in WG. There is no bus that would help us get to JW. Falls grove, Kings Farm, Derwood, Parc Potomac, College Gardens all very large communities outside of walking distance. They were already breaking back to school night into two nights to accommodate space wise and that was with the field filled with cars.
If you're not within walking distance, then this isn't about you.
For what it's worth, though - it's about 2 miles from Woodley Gardens to JW, which is a perfect biking distance. A 15-minute trip. In fact, it's probably faster than driving at mass school events, if you include time to park and to leave the parking lot.

Just looked at your 56 bus. It runs every 30 minutes and ends at 9:30. No way it can be used for JW evening event for hundred of people.
Will it work for everybody? No. Will it work for some people? Yes. Driving and parking doesn't work for everybody either.
I am glad we can agree that it does not solve the problem.

What are you smoking? No one is taking the cruddy bus line in the suburbs to get to a Back to School Night. The closest bus line to me is about about 1 mile. I am supposed to walk to that and get an indirect line to school. That will take me about 45min and it is a 7min drive. JW is landlocked with no other street parking or businesses nearby. And they once again wasted a ton of space in the front and left front of the school that could have went to parking when restructuring. MCPS literally makes up the worst plans for these schools. No thought to change that God awful lunch room and "stage" with all the kids there. It is embarrassing how much money and time was wasted on the new wing.
Anonymous wrote:Never said there should be parking for all the parents. It used to be just a field. It is not like a typical school where you might have to walk a distance in a neighborhood after parking on the street. There is no neighborhood street with parking. It is a 270 entrance...

If you choose to drive, that's fine. But keep in mind that you are also then choosing to either park your car a long way and walk, or fight with parking in some other way. The purpose of JW is to be a school, not to have ample parking on-site for large school events so that everyone can drive and easily park.
You must be from administration. You can't be this dumb to believe that is a school is not supposed to have parking for events at their school.![]()
