For lawyers, office of general counsel of any agency is considered prestigious.

That said I’d prefer higher pay and better conditions over almost anything else.

Indeed, there are many dimensions of prestigious.
Low pay but high public respect (think about the point on movies)
National security responsibility
Very very very high pay
Diplomatic level work
International developmental impact kind of work
Etc...

Finance, banking, world travel, decisions affecting people’s lives.

GOP is actively trying to destroy Ex-Im. Morale is terrible and everyone I know who worked there has fled.

Is it still prestigious though? Have things changed recently? They have been posting a lot of open positions lately, been thinking of applying.

People are fleeing in droves....what do you think? Basically, there is no work to do because stuff isn't funded. You sit in your seat for 8 hours and collect a paycheck. That's it.

For anyone with half a brain and aspirations to ACTUALLY DO WORK FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, it's a very bad place to be right now.

That said, Ex-Im will take on much greater importance if Democrats win in 2020. You could position yourself now as "toughing it out" and probably get promoted. Also, it's a good place to be if you want to learn financial modeling.

There is a new board that can finally approve large deals, new inspirational
chair, and new trainings, etc. We are recovering and therefore hiring. Try and see if you like what you hear at your interview.

USAID. Most of the people are highly educated and more well-traveled, widely traveled, and culturally educated than any other agency.

It’s getting better with the new board and chairwoman.

Depends on field, but I would say State, USTR/OMB, Treasury departmental offices, and DOJ

So many different ways to define “prestigious!” I think that my division—Treasury’s Terrorism & Financial Intelligence—is prestigious because 1. We ALWAYS get budget increases, with Congress usually giving us even more than the submitted budget requests and 2. Folks of every political persuasion (except fringes on the right & left) believe that the work we do is important.

Yeah, it's cool to see your job regularly depicted on TV and have people talk about your agency in hushed tones. Funny sometimes when they overly dramatize things, but usually pretty cool.

Agreed. I'm guessing FBI is the winner since there are clearly more shows and movies involving the agency.
