1) I’m down with whoever. But I want a redhead! Is that too much to ask?
2) this girl... isn’t cute. Really odd looking. *im* odd looking! But I’m also not going to be cast as Ariel.
And I don’t have red hair. Which again... is important to the story!
Ariel’s color red does not exist in nature. Hair dye, or a wig, or CGI will probably be used no matter who the actress is. Also, Aborigines have dark skin and red hair. So tell me, what does this actress not having red hair have to do with anything?
Again: you’re ok with a character of color being portrayed by a Caucasian? Sure hope so. Otherwise we’d have to call you a hypocrite.

White people are OVERREPRESENTED in entertainment, politics, education... literally every single sphere of life. So yes it’s fine to sub in a marginalized person for a role that would be YET ANOTHER white character but not okay to TAKE a rare role for a marginalized person and give it to YET ANOTHER white person to become one more in a sea of roles validating white people whole excluding marginalized peoples.
Get it???

I liked Hamilton because of the juxtaposition of historical figures who were clearly white being represented by minorities through the medium of rap, which originated from black culture. I loved that Black Panther was a movie that provided representation in just about every aspect.
What I don't like is this feeling of shoehorning in diversity. The Little Mermaid isn't real, but Ariel is an intellectual property of Disney who is instantly recognized as a white character with red hair. I could understand if The Little Mermaid was a dead property that no one really remembered, but that's not the case. Unless they're going to go the route of The Wiz and make everyone black, I don't see the point. Make something new.
I see your point but Disney (and the other major producers) are so focused on re-makes its silly. There's been three movies with Spiderman in this year alone and 3 different (white/male/cis) actors cast as Spiderman in the last two decades. They all look the same. If they just plan on regurgitating old story lines, why not let them use diverse characters for it?

The biggest reaction to this casting is the confusion that it is Halle Berry.
EXACTLY. I don't care what race they choose for the Little Mermaid (or any other role, for that matter), but heads would be exploding if the situation was reversed. Outrage and protests!! I'm so sick of the hypocrisy.

News flash: Fa Mu Lan was an actual historical person who really lived. Ariel was not an actual historical figure because mermaids are not real.

That said, I really really dislike the live action trend. The lion King characters look frightening, Aladin does not work as well and I have a feeling The little Mermaid is going to be lacking as well. Sometimes things that are fun as animation, are just plain scary as live action - I’m looking at you, Pumbaa
Funny that you just happened to name only those that are primarily POC in the main roles. What about Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Maleficient (Sleeping Beauty)?
DP. There's a live action Cinderella? Also, Maleficent isn't a live action remake.
