Why do so many on DCUM insist that UVA is not a prestigious school? I just don’t get it. It clearly is. I remember deciding to move to Virginia over Maryland 35 years ago because of the University of Virginia and the College of William and Mary. UVA being a top dog is nothing new.
Why so much animosity? Why so much denial?
nobody is denying anything that is true - we are just trying to balance out UVA boosters all of whom happen to be from Virginia. if UVA is so prestigious why aren’t people from Cali and Florida coming here to praise it? there are none. Every single one is a parent from NOVa
Because this is a DC centric board. UVA, is among the top universities in the nation for many disciplines. Not all. But many. And there are people in FL, in CA, in MA, in NY coming to UVA for College.
Similarly, there are people who get into UVA and decide it is not for them. My DD preferred the atmosphere at Va Tech over UVA.
it’s a DC centric board but people from MD Zaire decidedly less impressed by UVA. why is that?
MD is hard science crazy
not at all in my experience. it’s because they look at it from a distance and without the good deal VA residents are getting.
Md has always been NSA, NIH, NCI, biomedical ...
They are more about engineering, math, commuter science
Also agriculture..,
UVA is more about business school

Total applications: 40,869 (37,182 last year)
Total number of VA apps: 12,010
Total number of OOS apps: 28,859
Overall offers: 9,787
Total VA offers: 4,331 (36% offer rate)
Total OOS offers: 5,456 (19% offer rate)
60% of acceptees choose other schools. 40% yield rate tells me that people are using UVA as their safety. I know my kid did.
+1

UVA is known as a good school where I'm from.
OP, the simple fact of the matter is that haters are gonna hate. No reason to try to change their minds.

Nobody is saying it’s not a good choice.

I remember when the Ivies had 26% acceptance rates.... and when Chicago admitted more than half. I think even up to 60%.
Acceptance on their own are pretty meaningless. It really comes down to the quality of the admitted students. There was pretty much an arms race on lowering acceptance rates driven by USNews (which has now dropped it) causing schools to take actions to drive up the denominator. UVA's acceptance rate actually breaks down to 36% in-state and 19% OOS. The 36% may sound high, but there is a lot of self-selection.
