I just completed the survey and when I got to the 2 options was wondering why in the heck they bothered to ask all the questions prior to the 2 options! Why ask if I think winter break should be 2 weeks or less than 2 weeks, and then have me vote on the 2 options that both include 2 weeks for winter break (my vote was winter break should be less than 2 weeks). Usually you'd ask for input PRIOR to the development of the proposal, so it's clear the survey results mean nothing.

Yeah, and option 2 has the last day of school as a Monday. Like anyone would go that day.

I voted that I wanted a two week winter break and a fixed spring break. Don't care about the other days being holidays - no need for the kids to have off Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Inauguration Day given all the other teacher workdays in there.

I like Spring Break being tied to Easter because sometimes it’s as late as late April and we can actually enjoy a warm vacation somewhere.

I like the 2 weeks at Xmas. I also like spring break floating because as someone else mentioned, it's nice when it falls later and it is warm.

I'd just soon do away with a bunch of the little holidays -- inauguration, president's day, etc. Couldn't care less if they have those days off.

I said to have school on Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Inauguration Day. I also said to always have a set spring break for the last week in March.
I really want them to get rid of two weeks at Xmas. I’d rather save the time for the snow/cold/wind days you know are coming in Jan & Feb.

I know it’s just a formality and I think they’ve already picked version 1.

The survey is a formality and also a guise. FCPS "cares" about parent input. Yea, right.

I don’t like to pull my kids out of school to travel but I might do it for 2 days that week...

Eh - I would love a week off from school in Jan. We are a big ski family so any opportunity to head to the mountains (especially mid-week) would be awesome.

And given Jan is typically nothing but snow and ice delays and cancelations than FCPS can "save" their snow days for Feb.


I'd be fine with a week off in Jan as long as they don't also have 2 weeks off at Christmas. Seems crazy to return from a 2 week break, have 2 weeks of school and then be off for 3+ days. May as well make Christmas 1 week and then do 1 week in jan.

Isn't it a federal holiday (at least in the DC area, however that works)? I was surprised to see that question as I didn't think it was an option.

Federal employees in the Washington, DC, area are entitled to a holiday on the day a President is inaugurated (January 20 following a Presidential election). Employees are entitled to this holiday if they are employed in-

the District of Columbia;
Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland;
Arlington and Fairfax Counties in Virginia; and
the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church in Virginia.
When Inauguration Day is moved to January 21st because January 20th falls on Sunday, Federal employees in the Washington, DC, area who would otherwise work on Monday, January 21st, are entitled to a holiday on that day.


Just because it is a Federal Holiday doesn't mean school needs to be closed. Veteran's Day is a federal holiday and FCPS is still open.
