I was part of a mom's day out program and occasionally a dad would fill in for his wife when it was her turn to work. I remember at the beginning of the year at a parent meeting when the leader was going over the rules, she said that dad's could not change diapers. Sad to say, but people are just way too uncomfortable about a male they don't know changing their kids diaper. I wondered what the reaction would be if women were being told that they couldn't do something because of a very negative public stereotype about them.

Yes. I realize that's not a politically correct answer, but yes, I would be creeped out by a male pre-k teacher.

That’s gonna be a big fat no. I’d never send my kid to catholic school to begin with nor a preschool with a male teacher. Nope. I don’t even like that she’s in a Christian preschool with a pastor who holds chapel once a week but I refrain from being a nut job about it and make sure she knows there aren’t any circumstances where she should ever be alone with him or any other grown-up besides me, DH, MIL, my own sister, SIL, and my brother. That’s it. My parents aren’t abusers but they have poor judgment and can’t handle little kids on their own anyway.

When was the last time an intelligent female teacher sexually abuse preschool children?

A local preschool had an abuse issue last year with a male teacher, so I can understand the concern. I preferred female teachers when my kids were in preschool. That said, they had a male teacher for K who was great. I agree to go with your gut even if not politically correct.

The real question is: why is your kid wearing a diaper to school? Actually a daycare not really a school?

While it is true that more men have been known to abuse or sexually assault young children than women, I would never pick any daycare for preverbal children that only had one care provider in the room, male or female. This is one of the reasons we went with a center, because the center always required two teachers per room of up to six children. The center we chose had a director and an assistant director who both worked every day and if there was an emergency where a teacher had to leave before the children were gone, one would go into the room and provide backup for the remaining teacher.

As for a nanny, we actually interviewed nannies for our twins, but realized that even with care.com background checks, we were not completely comfortably with an unknown watching our children when they were young. Had a nanny (male or female) been recommended by another family that we knew, we would have been fine. But too many bad stories nowadays. After the children were able to talk, I would have been less wary.

So for me, it is not the sex of the teacher, but the appropriate safeguards.

I'm so appalled by those of you who automatically assume a male teacher is a pedophile because you don't think any male would ever want to be around children. I have to assume you are the same posters who complain that your husbands aren't engaged or are never around.

And the person who said why would an educated male work for law pay? Ugh. YOU are what is wrong with this world! Why do you assume women are just fine to work for low pay, but not men??

My 3 year old has a male preschool teacher. He is one of two teachers, and the other is a female.

It doesn't bother me in the least bit, in fact I like that my son doesn't have to associate childcare with only women. I hope that he continues to have male teachers.

Now, if my child was in a classroom with only a male, and he was at an age where he still needed help on the toilet, I'll admit that my concern radar would go off a little bit. But in a classroom where there is always another teacher around, or in a classroom where kids are old enough to not need toilet help, a single male teacher would not bother me in the least.
