Op here. I don’t dress too differently from my friend. She is more polished and puts more effort into her looks. She’ll never leave the house without hair and makeup. I often go to brunch in no makeup and natural hair.

I don’t understand how I’m attracting the hipsters and underachievers. I am well spoken, a lot more “sophisticated” than said friend in that I read a lot and am a policy wonk. She is simply...very pretty and into makeup and social climbing.


You know the answer to your own question already but are hoping people will build you up and encourage your homeliness instead.

So, she plays their game and you don't, and yet you are puzzled by this? Do you WANT to attract these men? Then play the game. You cannot sneer at the game and them moan that no one rewards you for that.

Read the first paragraph and that explains the 2nd. You go out "crunchy", you get crunchy. You want preppy, dress preppy. Comb your hair, make it look nice and put on complimentary makeup but not overdone.

OP, I have known many very beautiful women who were purchased — I mean, chosen — by rich men. The men are competitive, so to show off a hot wife is very similar to showing off an expensive new car or watch. See: Donald Trump. It’s not actually a happy life. There are many wonderful men out there who have good jobs and are kind and loving and responsible without being competitive d*cks looking for supermodels.

Ok it is a little fetish-y to *only* date SA women, but I get that you are attracted to whoever you are attracted to, and I +1 your final thought.

I'm a South Asian woman (with a white husband) and I think this totally explains the OPs insecurity. Insecurity + racial self hatred + SA dating/marriage culture wherein people are judged by their qualities (rather than having chemistry/falling in love)
