Back to the subject at hand, I love that my child's teachers are accessible and so is the principal. He is there just about every morning at arrival and available to talk to parents informally and formally. He is also open and honest about changes that need to be made and areas that need to be improved. I work in DC schools so maybe I have low standards, but I have never once heard a child being addressed inappropriately at my child's school in NE Silver Spring.

Look every few months you post this thread and DEMAND that people only give you positive accolades. Its like the evil queen demanding that the mirror tell her how beautiful she is when she is ugly. MCPS is deeply flawed and its no secret. Many of the positives that do exist such as some great teachers are in spite of the central office not due to it. A few great teachers can't make up for all the other problems that MCPS inflicts on everyone.
This is a discussion board not a propaganda board for public relations staff. You can't expect to throw out BS and then not let anyone point it out or disagree because you want a thread that only tells you what you want to hear. It doesn't work that way.

Don’t blame all the teachers. Yes, some are not great, but some are fantastic!
My kid’s 5th grade teacher is given material from MCPS to use in class and it is riddled with errors. She knows it and the kids know it, so it’s become a thing, where the kids have to figure out the mistakes.
Such a joke that they are provided such horrible materials from MCPS. But, I certainly don’t blame the teacher.
So the lteacher doesn’t go to her principal or administration asking why there are errors. She just keeps handing them out?

Its so frustrating when apologists add on well abuse happens everywhere. It does NOT happen with the near constant frequency that you see within MCPS. MCPS has a history of hiding predators and became a magnet for them.
For the person moving to the area -the one equalizing factor within MCPS is the danger from employees who are child predators having access to your children. It has happened in wealthy and poor clusters. You need to talk to your kids about what to look out for and what to do . If you suspect something call the police not MCPS. MCPS has a history of not doing anything. The one good thing about MoCo is that the police department is really good and utterly disgusted by MCPS. They will take the report seriously and know that the school will try to protect the predator.
On the curriculum - do not trust that your child is getting the skills they need. They aren't. Its important to learn math outside the system and read level appropriate books at home. Science is non existent in K-5 and watered down in 6-8.

OP, where in MoCo did you move? People here are spoiled and don’t realize that, even though we have problems, we have it better than many other places and the special needs services are the best in the country.
Mother of two special needs children in a W school cluster. For some disabilities - ie. autism - a child may get better than elsewhere in the country. However, for most disabilities, MCPS in my cluster has done a bad job from screening, identifying, and following the IEPs they wrote for my children. I paid for private testing that showed far more than MCPS recognized in my children. I paid for private services to fill in gaps when MCPS was falling flat in implementing the services recommended.
I have a nephew who received better services when my sister moved out of state. Instead of mindless meetings with no followup, their school district focussed on the child and used universal design to teach study skills on a general education classroom to compensate for his disability including integrating apps on his phone for organization and reminders. I would have moved to where my sister is if it wasn't for my husband's job being tied to the DC area.
One child was abused at school by a staff member. His disability made him a target. That is as bad as MCPS gets. I took him out of MCPS when we found out what happened.
I’m sorry you did not have a good experience. We have been given so many resources and so much help for our son (not on the spectrum) it’s been wonderful. Whenever we visit our pediatrics dec doc she says how lucky we are to be in moco because we’ll get what we need since they have the resources.
I hear horror stories about kids not being eligible for services in other counties and states simply bc their need isn’t “bad enough”
As for the abuse charges, that is obviously horrifying, unfortunately mcps isn’t the only place it happens.
What was horrifying was finding out that the teacher had been caught before. My child was not the first. MCPS "progressively discipline" teachers even when there is a pattern of predatory grooming till the police can make an arrest.
