Knightley was embarrassingly bad in A Dangerous Method.

That says more about you than her.

She was in the pirate movies?

Interesting. In my world Tilda Swinton is Tilda Swinton of our time. And I love Streep, Knightley, Kidman etc.

This thread makes me realize how many wonderful actresses there are right now. Maybe not a single giant, like Meryl, but many really terrific ones, doing good work, and well into their 40s and 50s.

I like Keira Knightley but she’s just not at the same level of any of the other actors mentioned in this thread (except for LindsayLohan who is just a sad waste of potential).

Rachel Weisz is a better actress than KK or Kidman.

That was 20 years ago. I also bristle when people throw around "legend" when referring to 30 yr olds.

I never thought Bacall was a legendary actress, either.

Oh, I like this idea! She was hesartbreaking in Manchester by the Sea.

She was also good in Wendy and Lucy, and in My Week With Marilyn. She takes far more risks, too, acting in lots of indie/auteur/experimental films: I'm Not There; Synecdoche, New York; The Station Agent; etc.

I think that Knightly is a decent actress, but her range has been pretty narrow.

Not to be harsh, but Michelle Williams is pretty forgettable. I doubt the average person could name one movie she has been in.

Not the same league as Streep or Blanchett.

The average person you quoted listed 5 films MW is in, and I'll add Blue Valentine to the list.

She's also set to be Gwen Verdon in an upcoming tv show about Bob Fosse and frankly there aren't too many actresses today who is enough of a triple threat to play Verdon.

I am an average movie goer, and the only movie I recognize is Manchester by the Sea. Those movies listed are not movies the average moviegoer sees.

How about The Greatest Showman or Brokeback Mountain?

IMO Blanchett is the only one who even remotely compares to MS.
I do think Nicole Kidman is highly talented and under utilized, same with Naomi Watts. Give these ladies some great roles and then let’s talk again about the Meryl Streep of our time- sorry I don’t think KK will ever be in the running.

Blanchett and Winslet, yes.

Kidman, no. She's as popular as she is b/c she is willing to show a lot of nudity. And b/c of her marriages.

Completely disagree with this. Completely.

Yep, I’d add Amy Adams.

Anonymous wrote:To be the next Meryl an actress must shine in both dramatic and comedic roles. Anne Hathaway had potential at one point but she doesn’t get as many roles anymore. Rachel McAdams is another one.

And if we’re mentioning actresses over 50 I think Viola Davis is fantastic

Amy Adams is amazing. She is wonderful in both comedic and dramatic roles.
