When does the reprimand come for a child with this behavior become okay? Nothing happened to the child? No disciplinary action taken. But the counselor sure got reprimanded for protecting his/herself though. Maybe the parents should stop and think. I know my kid loves Janney. He talks about it all the time. So relax people!!!
There are very strict rules about how physical restraint can be used, particularly if the child has an IEP. There are specific ways to descalate that don't involve having to use force on a child.

If the email from Janney administration is about a counselor getting kicked... I think the school probably should have just done a minor incident report and moved forward. Ive seen kids kicking and screaming a lot at the Janney so I cant really imagine why they would send an email about this specific incident.
Well the parents of the child involved believe that something very different happened and have suggested there is physical evidence to support their claim. The parents version strikes me as a lot less likely than the alternative but I wasn't there and appreciate the school investigating what happened. And what happened was apparently in a room full of people, including other adults.
This. As a Janney parent, I cannot understand why most of the Janney parents on this thread are not disturbed by this incident. They are acting like this happens everyday. Well it doesn't.
What, as a Janney parent (of whom I am one), is there to be disturbed about? Based on some emails that have been circulating I think I've heard the two different versions of what happened. The version implicating the staffer strikes me as an almost improbable story. The version implicating the child on the other hand strikes me as being completely believable. But the truth could be either version or somewhere in between and I wasn't there.
The school removed the staffer from this position and is investigating.
I am not disturbed about this and am not even anxiously awaiting the results since I can't think of what to be anxious about - and the apparent staffer (I've still not seen anything explicitly naming the person) is someone our child dealt with every day.

That is like calling water wet, but such is life with hyper sensitive Janney parents who think their kids are perfect and should never be corrected.
You seriously think UMC parents at any other school would react differently? Or is this just another opportunity for you to troll Janney?
I’m an UMC parent at another highly regarded DCPS school. We once had the unfortunate experience of having a school aide slap our child during aftercare. Our child has some SN and related behavior problems and struck the aide first. Before we’d even blinked, aftercare had notified child protective services. Plus DCPS had filed a police report and launched an independent investigation.
Anyway, I don’t want to reveal more than I already have, except to say I am grateful that the parents at our school did NOT behave like some of the Janney parents in this thread in response. Also, in our case, the aide involved was deeply remorseful and not someone who had ever (to our knowledge) behaved like that before. We did NOT want the aide to lose her job and become destitute. It was a highly regrettable incident. But we definitely did not regard the aide to be an overall threat to kids, ours included.
In any case, I posted up above that other parents should stay out of it.
So it sounds like your situation was entirely different and doesn't allow conclusions about how any parents at your school (please realize that a few posters here don't represent Janney parents in general) might have behaved in an analogous situation. I don't have kids in Janney aftercare and have no idea what happened, but it sounds to me that the school is dealing with it appropriately. I also agree that there is no way for any school to rule out the possibility of any staff member ever acting in an inappropriate way.
Actually, it sounds like her situation was very similar. I am almost positive that I know the parent and child from the above post, and I only recently heard of this event from my child. As soon as I read the OP of this thread I thought of the similar event at our school. The school dealt with it effectively (as far as I know, and as it sounds from PP's account) and without creating a schoolwide crisis. I cannot for the life of me understand how the parents on this thread are getting from that email from Janney's administration to AGH, COVERUP, ALERT THE MEDIA.
